Queen's College. In the Anglo-Indian school, I think there is room for considerable development, and I know that with regard to the British schools Mr. Williams and Mr. James are doing their utmost to push them on while Belitian School, Mrs. Bateman's successor has dae work in front of her in training the future mothers of the Colony. I thought that these general remarks on education in the Colony would be more interesting. to you, ladies and gentlemen, than any detailed hich have been read. With regard to those reports as to the work of the boys, I have only to add that I think much has been done in the past year by Mr. Curwa, and Mr. Young Hee, and Mr. Morris has made an excellent afast in his school. I give my school prize on this Occation to the head boy of the New Yaumati School (loud applause). I have now to exprces my thanks and the thanks of the Government so Mr. He Tung, and to declare the Yaumati School open (loud applause).

Canton, 16th January, -- Great excitement still prevalis among the merchants and gentry here, in consequence of the Viceroy's proposal to levy new taxes for the construction of the Canton-Hankow railway, Kwai (a native of Canton), has come forward on behalf of the people, and he has promised to proceed to Paking with the view of getting Viceroy Shum removed, unless the proposal to raise money by obnoxious taxes is withdrawn. The Government have issued instructions to the Telegraph Department not to accept or transmit any messages relating to this matter. The marchants of Canton would have closed their doors in protest, if the ex-Viceroy of Foo- chow had not offered his services as the
