That was so, perhaps, in the old days, but now sdays pearling, is, like most other things, an undertaking that needs a lot of capital To make it pay the parler requires a fleet of lug- gers and a' scliooner to act as depot and float; Ing store. The year must be of the host, and gear is expensive. The schooner may costs couple of thousand pounds to

out, and each lugger about £100. So that the pearling is a big business, and at least one of the Thursday Island Beets represents, a capital valus of 30,000. The wages sheet is a large one, and the divers and crews used to spend all their money in Thursday Įsiend, drawal of the feet will make a big difference to that place.

WHY THEY ARE QUINO,

The reasons given for the departure of the deewvary a good deal,, Much is made of the Commonwealth legislation, which will deprive the boat of the South Sea Islanders, who form the great bulk of the crew; but there in another reason, namely, that all the shallow grounds near Thursday bland are pretty well fished out for the present, and it is understood that some good grounds have been found among the Dutch Islands. The depth at which a diver works varies fum 8 to 20 fultoms. Plenty divers, go down, at aver o fathoms, but it is apt to paralyze them when they get much of it, The Japanese are the best divers, being very, song, and very persistent. The South Sea divers and Mantlasten are more Lunning at finding shell than are the Japs, but the latte will walk with dogged, privéverance for unites under water, hunting for shelf, and in the loug rus they will outwork and mitias' the'ollten.

KO GAME FR THE WHITE MAN, White divers die just as good as, any other divers-in fact the pioneer divers of the Straits were white men-but they du om care about the slavery at the price. They can do belter ai other trades, and, in the present state of the shelf market, there is no chance of wh te divers taking to the dress sigain. The Japanese live made the trade of diving almost their own, and they.send thousands of pounds away to Japan every year in money orders to their relatives. A few Manilamen and South Sea boys are in the business, but not very many. They do ant like the hard work,

MUD-B¢PPING ·

The divers on the Australian cum look with contempt on the diving that goes on in the Ferning Gulf and other places. There the diving is done from a vessel at a chor, but off the Australian coast the veski is sailed while the diver walks along the bett of the ocean, "and directs a steeisman absove, by puils on the life line. It is nothing uncommon for a man to go down in one pot, and he hauled to

the surface two miles from where he went down. These divers lunk úpon, diving from an anchored vessel as a very primitive business, and they call it *n ud-hopping," after the Inde fish that dodges in and out of the mudholes on. tropical beaches,

THE PEARLS.

The divers do not expect to get many pearls of value, as the work of a pearl- depends, so much on its shape and lustre Hundreds, nay, thousands, of bona-file peals are gel that ne of very little value, owing to defective shape, and chase are called "luisack.". They are made into brooches and pins, and have a market value, } but nothing comparable, to true shaped pearls. The sale of the shell is supposed to at least pay all expenses, and the pearl are clear profit; but the price of shell is law now, and the deep-diving means loss of time in getting mea up and down, so there would be no wonder that the boats are off to other grounds. The, "ald ground," near Th red y Island, has been fished for years, and is only about 9 fathoms deep, but it is pretty well fished out row. The experts say that a ground is soon-re-stocked' with pearl water if left alone, so this ground may renew its payability

UNDER THE VÁTER.

When a diver is going over the side his "tender," or attendant, holds the life-line, while another pays out the coile of the air tube, While the diver is below, two' men work the air pump unceasingly. Once in the water, with boots soled with lead, and cornlet of lead on his breast, he is absolutely at the mercy of the a should anything fail in the working of the pump and of the air tube. An the small number of deaths that we hear of speaks volumes for the care bestowed on their work by those who make the diving gear and those who use it--Sydney
