THE VOLUME OF LIFE, 17hiva always found the chief charm of skistence in trying to read the book of human Be-the most fascinating, the most delightfully fresh and phrancially interesting volume that exists; the first book published, yet one that is aver now when the newest of other books har palled; and never have I read this quila as I do read other matters, for here there is no hypers criticism, no harsh, cold judgment of the intel- lect, for I am's part of the great book, am every day doing my share in writing it. And no 1 love it and it is in this spirit that I read, that

it is not well for a county to deny her best

bone and brawn and brain the chance to siny with her and help to keep her and her national standerd of mind and body as high as ever they were so it is that I see that generation after generation of dear old England's best, most enterprising, and most vigorous have gone forth, leaving her the poorer. Sa it is I see that generations of her best will go forth to leave room for the pleasants, and the partridges, and the grouse, and the rabbits, all of which, na doubt, are of greater importanza to. England than the men. And so I see that in the end it will come to pass that the men of old England will not be as they were, take they pot heed ere it be ton Isle, for now it in time for England to take as her watchword what the Prince of Wales aid when he returned from visiting the lasty sons of Empire in their homes across the sen, where they watch with fond hearts" and

A singular and rather mysterious fatality reported to have occurred in a shooting camp in the neighbourhood of Chaser. It appears that a holiday party of five Europeans of the Calcutta Police and Fire Brigade arrived seve ral weeks ago at Chungs and Barted out for the bills to the west of the railwy, pitching their tents about six miles from the station. The members of the party used to go out daily shooting, leaving one of their number behind Per Print-Regers Luftfold, from Yokohama with the cook and a few coolie's to look after Mr. C. A Hutchison. A large class of Americana, most of us, in fact, do not have variety enough in food. In the cities this is not so likely to be true, but in the smaller towns and country places, where there are not many varieties of food placed in market, grént "masses of population grow up accustomed to eat so few things that they wouldable winds and moderate sea, and from thence probably be surprised if they made a list of them, so short wou'd it be,

And so af vegetables-only the commodest worts are used, and that only when cooked in the simplest manner,

It is not in the least true that the people of any given country have the cuisine best suited to that country. The most noteworthy proof to the contrary may be found in France, which leads the world not only in the delicacy and savoșinası of its cookery, bat in its variety and economy as well.

Yet it is doubtful in the modern French cuisine any trace of the French cooking of three centuries ago remains. Paris learned to cook from Provance, and Provence took the cookery of Italy and Spain, chiefly the former, and improved it into its present form.
