Mr. and Mrs. Sandow were conducted to the D. · SANDOW NOT»Â‹ SHOWMAN..
It is idle at this time of day to treat Eugene Sandow as a showman. From the day,, not many years ago, when as a more stripling ha- came into sudden fame by engaging the great Samson, and showing how piles of mere human beef availed noʻhing against a scientifi- cally developed muscular system, Saędów has consistently pursued his great idea of teaching the foundations of true physical health,⠀
Before that our young men need to lift heavy dumbbells and swing Indian clubs, und feel: Immensely proud when their biceps' swelled, to the size of a goola's egg.
,!
Sandow has made us remember that tete are other muscles besides the biceps, and other "means of keeping erect besides wearing staya mad lying, on a plank. We were all too much in danger of becoming like the hermit crab, whose limbs or claws are big, while its body
is shrivelled to a small, soft appendage. The great muscles of the body itself; were forgotten and now "that we have given up the rough-and-tumble work of field and farm and forest, and glued ourselves to stools and chairs, these great primal muscles have beau shrinking, and the functions of breathing, digestion, and nutrition have been suffering accordingly.
It is an age of crooked backs and pillt and powders, when really the muscles of the waist and chest are at fault... And Sandow, though 'not a doctor, w the first to 'din this fact into our ear; and in perfect a scientific remedy which all the great kuthorities are now toani- mous in adopting. The cry about physical deterioration" comes after Sandow has shown the core,
A MISSIONARY OF HEALTH.
Chatting, away, In the saloon till all the tea was cold, and he was, too late for a cur, San- dow told me (writes our representative) about ́his long travels round the world. 'n China India, the Straits Settlements, Africa, and America be has been pursuing a mission teaching the people the way of sound physical health.
*But surely in the East they were able
to teach you something "
