celerity the position of selected points on coasts all over the world It was not claiming too much to say that at the present time very faw salient points on the coastlines of the world were as much as iwn miles in doubt." It was's Satisfaction to the Briton to know that both these instruments were devised by English-long Wan I, Dr., 2,060, J. Staker, 26th ment John Hadlay producing the sextant in 1730, in the form still used. on the basis of C. Ideas formulated by Newton go years before: and John Harrison the chronometer in 1736.
The latter instrument had undergone modi. catlaps in detail, but the principle remained the same. It required 70 years before its value was fully recognised and it came into general live. It was a still further satisfaction to think
that it was British naval officers who bad made by far the greatest use of them' in 'mapping the cobels of the whole world. Since the time of the great Captain Cook British surveying ves sele had been constantly,, employed in this work, not only in British Colonies, but in all parts, alding and often paving the way for Bri tish commerce, and for the men-of-war that protected it. It was difficult to find coasts of any extent that had not been laid down by Bri- tish marine surveyors. The whole of Africa. had been their work. By far, the greater part of America, all the south and east coasts of Asia, Australia, and most of the inaumemble islands in all oceans have been fixed and laid down by them. Even in the Mediterranean, till very lately, the charts were mostly founded on British surveys, and the improvements now being carried out by other nations on their own costs in details required for modern navigation did not materially modify the main shapes and positions formerly determined by the British. 11 had been a great work, and, as the results of the wise Administration of the Admiralty for many year and of the immediate labours of predecessors as hydrographers, this great ad- vance in geographic accuracy of the chronometer method, he might mention that on taking at bazard it places distributed all over the world at great distances from England whose longi- tudes had been recently determined by means of the electric telegraph and eleborste series of observations, the average 'difference between the chronometer and the telegraph positions was found to be 700 yards. But marine surveys were still imperfect. Hundreds of rocke and shoals both stretching from the land and iso lated in the sea, had been missed in the course of them, and lots of ships

YOU CAN GROW GOOD LUCK.
་་་་
"What is luck? Why is it that some people soom peculiarly endowed with power to claim their own in the important transactions of life.. while others seem quitò an emphatically to lack that ability...
What is the x-cret of this mysterious same- thing that enables one person to command the Jofluance, the encouragement and the promo. tion he desires while another quite as gifted
• and fully an "enpahle strupules or, year after year, never achieving the success for which he
strives?
There are many discouraged men and wo.. men asking this question to-day, and asking it bitterly. Perhaps they have talents and
capacities that were never reconized. Per haps they sought in vain for the stimulus and help that was bestowed upon persons loss gift. ed than they.
+.
Was luck responsible for the success ofthose others? If so, what in luck? What is it that makes this man or woman lucky and that one unlucky?", a
There is A., whose talents are not out of the common, yet who manages always to enlist the
sympathy of prople who are able to advance
kim, while ♬, who has worked and struggled Just as hard and whose abilities are more marked finde it impossible to interest others In his projects.
What is the secret of A/'s power to draw just the right sort of opportunities for success?
How about a young woman with the ambi. tion to sing whose voice is not at all' remarke
abis, yet whona "luck" is en pronounced that
sha wins friends and compeli success, while her sister with superior talent fails to getħa hearing?
Perhaps you who rend this are among the questioners. Perhaps you have deemed the lucky man or woman to he expecially favoured by Providence or fate singled out !o experience good fortune from which you are de barred. If this has been your belief, abandon it at onge for by it you are drawing to yourself the very forces that keep gand fuck from you.
Do you know that you can grow good luck that you can coltivate it Just as definitely as you can cultivate your voice, nr develop your mus. cle, or train your memory?
If you have never thought so before, think it Bow. For it is true, That person whose amoring good fortune causes you to marvel doce ni possess any different power than you can you self develop. The causes of his prosperity are
· Jovisible, They belong to the realm of mind. The secret of his Tuck lies in the fact that he * has drawn about himself the thought forces that attract the things he wants. He has what Lillian Whiting describes as the "gift in bim. self which magnetizes conditions Bw. This gift le yours. Develop it. You can be. Begin now to grow pond lack. This very day,
this very hour, you are by your thinking creat ing the mental conditions that altber Add to ¦¦ your good luck forces ar subtract from them,
If you would keep the thought atmosphere about you charged with the magnetism that sitracts, success, be about it now, Rid your mind of the ballef that you are not lucky. That In the first step
