while they themselves spend their time gal- livanting from house to house in search of that flecting shadow, pleasure. Nobody will deny the fact that a vast amount of respon- sibility is cast upon the amah. She is the foster-mother of the children under her charge. They come to look to her for guidance and support. It is to her that they confide their little troubles, and seek ex- planations of the strange things that come A. S. WATSON & Co., within their narrow horizon. If the amah is trustworthy, and undoubledly in the majority of cases they are beyond reproach, the child grows up in in atmosphere created by the amab, variad with occasional glimpses of a land where all is milk and honey, and fine dresses and elegant manners form the chief features of the landscape. That the children born in the tropics, reared by amahe, and sent into the schoolroom with a hazy idea of what European life means, prove themselves [32 capable of holding their own in the fight for mastery, speaks volumes for the care of the average amah. People come to the East who have never been accustomed to the eternal-presence of servants when they live at home. Some have been brought up in households where servants were unknown, which is in no way derogatory to them. But once they come under the spell of the East, they accept the

I understand that Mr. Arthur, who was aboard at the lime, was buried beneath the wreckage for abolit five minutes, but managed to scramble out with his houseboy. He lost most of his belongings.

LAST night the bar-boy at the Praya East Hotel collected 20 cents from a customer as the price of a drink served, and put the money in his pocket and gave no account of it to his master, Mr. Orani, the proprietor of the hotel, witnessed the transaction and sent for the police, In- spector Gauld this morning charged the boy with the theft, and Mr. Orme seat him to 21 day hard labour, with six hours' exposure in the stocks.

ANOTHER ATTEMPT TO RE-FLOAT THE CRUISER.

As mentioned in our columns a few days since another attempt will be made to refloat the French cruiser Sully which went ashore on an uncharted rock in the Bay of Along in the early part of this year. The cofferdam sent down by the Hongkong and Whampoa Dock Company has been repaired and it is stated to be in excellent condition. The attempt will be made, provided the weather conditions are suitable, on Tuesday, the 15th inst, and it is hoped that success will crown the venture, The very fact that the Sully has remained on the rock for nearly six months without sustain- ing any material injury is a tribute to French

A BOYCOTT TRAGEDY.

MERCHANT SHOT AT WUCHOW,

One of the first tragedies among the natives of the West River porta la connection with the boycolt movement hai just been reported, and from the fsċli reisted to us it would seem that the merchants of Wuchow will be among the strongest supporters of the agitation. It is stated that early to the week, Sze Kee Cheung, a well known merchant having exten sive business dealings in Wuchow, arrived at the port with a thousand bays of flour which had been consigned to him from America. He was desirous of landing the cargo and storing it in his godowns, and engaged a number of

coolies to carry out the work. One of them noticed that the flour was from Ametics and pointed this out to Sze, at the same time remark- ing that it could not be removed. The mer- chant assured him that all would be well and that he was in a position to undertake that no statement

The "boy" must always be at their beck and call; he must be quite as ready to untie a shoelace or close a window as to prepare the matutinal cup or act as a celestial "Jeames." When the children appear, they are con signed to the neah, who becomes an essen- tial a part of the household as the cook himself. It is not suggested for a mument that the sojourners in Hongkong show any exceptional carelessness in the matter of looking after their children, but it can be
