THE MAGICIAN OF THE KEYS,
M. Paderewski 1sdying most seriously ill at Boston, S. It is iven feared that hi miy netier be able to play again!
Fifteen or sixteen years ago I first heard Paderewski play; in the Dome at Brighton. He was making his first-tour in England, and IFA schoolboy, had been taken in by the music master at I-, psitly as a reward for my own painful diligence in Bach's two-part "Inven- tions, more that I might gain a real ensample
the fruits of diligence.
1.
We were some way from the platform, and was sleepy before the performance began from „A generous "blow-out "at Bonth's. But still my memory, clearly holds the appearancebi
that tall, slender figure, with its au cole of led
gold bair, pale, and dreamy unseeing efekat ted the curious, stiff blue low, one right, one left, one to the centre-a sudden break from the waist like the binging of a pocket rule, his hands hanging limply before him and swing. ing out from the body by his own inertia as le bowed.
Something of a violent player in those days, he wreathed himself about on his seat (then, as I believe now, very low to the keys), and waved his bands like cavalry sabres in a melde -particularly in Chopin's second Baltade, where I tried to follow iam in the music and found that he had finish d the "presto con- fuoco" before I had turned the page.
PASSION. AND, PATHOS.
He was quieter in meikod when I heard him, at Southampton some seven years later, but
· more affame in spirit even than when he fired
a schoolboy's shy, seluciant rapture to open demonstration by his-playing of that wonder of passion and pathos, the D Minor Sonata of Beethoven, Op. 31, No. 7.
On, this occasion he played the "Appas sionara," with his rendering of which some ultramontane purists quartet, because, I believe, be plays octaves in the bass in one 'part where ingle notes are written. But if the meaning.
of the word "appassionata " is som, thing swap out of all contrul of itself by the intensity and
vehemence of its emotion, there was l'ederen-
aki's rendering of it truer than what any living pianist has achieved,
Once when Rusenikal was playing in Paris,
Lemember heating an English lady behind me burst out at the interval in dithyrambic ecstasies. But her companion closed her eyes and wagged her head slunly and decisively "He hasn't got the soul of Pad-dy-mo-ski" ---- she said,
When Paderewskilo his twentieth year went to Strasburg as a professor, it was discovered

HENS TO THE END.
Long ago his execution was spoken of as extraordinary. Now that most people can achieve Chopin's D flat major waltz in double instead of single port, and everybody can play Lin's "Don Juan" great deal faster than it was meant to be played, we talk less of Pade. fewrki's technique.
Because he uses it only as means to an end, as Michel Angela used his unsurpassed know- ledge of human animay. Where he takes liberties with the text one is reminded of the defaltion of a fanatic as a person who "does what he believes (rovidence would have done 35 knew the circumstances of the case "the composer would have written it that way, one feel, if he had known Paderewski in the

TWO WORLDS.
It is a commonplace that Paderewski hates society. I saw it once in the drawing-room of allon-huntress; the only moment that he ap: peared at ease was when the lady's little girl was made to play, to him (which she did very cubrmingly, and with my chiss affectation of behaviour, iban gne could a cusjhermamma) and Paderewski laid his hand on her Boulder, saying kindly. You play very pret tily, my child; thank you." But for the rest of theevening he looked intensely bored.
So, too, with the applause of the concert hall, They say that he still suffers agonies of ner

But on the in tant that his hands are on the
