"NOPBLISIS' LAW,
BY BASIL TOZEN.
No practising lawyer, I believe. I ant right in saying, has ever made ä reputation as a writer of fiction. Judging by the amusing "legal blunders" perpetrated by some of our fatter- day minor novelists, it seems doubtful if writer of fiction would, body, set the Thames on fire if they adopted the profession of law as a second string to their bow. Circumstances necessita's my perusing a great
deal of modern Action of an inferior kind, and from it I have extracted a goodly number of legal "howlers" not entirely devoid of humour. The first of these that I have selected occur in connection with the doings of an uncon
sciorable little prig, Lord Arthur Preston, who, chevied by creditors and "tiresome persons of that_stamp"-I quote these words 'from the book-has so far debased himself in bis own estimation to appeal to his uncle's lawyer for advice,
But supposing my father, the Earl, should cut the entail,' Lord Arthur exclaimed, addres sing the solicitor as if in his own walk in lifes 'what then?!.
There is always the mortgage to fall back upon to bar it answered. the thin-lipped
lawyer peevishly. If the worst came to the worst you could always foreclose with the residuary legaree, or even, he added drily, 'ruiso a post-obit after the old gentleman's death."
It is well to know that this muddle-headed
family lawyer spoke "drily." Otherwise it

***Claude was always a wild lad,' said the Countess, 'always n wild lad!"—this time the wiiter is a woman, "Don't you recollect how, in order to free himself af bis gambling debts at college, he frittered away Mabel's trustees sic) at cards with that odious little Jew we met at Lady Belthaven's last spring? I hope, I only hope, his title deeds are quite
mafe!"
At the Old Bailey and Scotland Yard they think rather more seriousty than this Countess thought of a man who embezzlei trust moneys. But then Claude frittered away the trust moneys in order to pay-or, at least, in a weak
attempt to pay his debts of honour, so no doubt in the opinion of the Countess the frittering was merely a peccadillo on his part. It would be interesting to know what Mabel thought when she heard of it. But perhaps he
raised a post-obil on his title deeds or merigage ad the freehold of his leasehold estates to pay her back before she bad been told.
In a novel almost exactly, similar in tone and style is enacted the following remarkable
scone!-
"It was the morning of the quarterly pec- ty sessions in the quaint old cathedral city. .. Nearly three-quarters of an hour had passed since the judge and his jury of twelve, good men and true had disappeared into the antechamber... Do you find the accused guilty or no?' asked the Public Prosecutor is trembling accents, 'We do,' the jury cried in chorus; 'we do. We find him guilty on all counts. The judge rose slowly. His face was ashen white, pro Dounce sentence in accordance with the verdict of the jury-I condemn this man to death was all he said."
