THE INCIDENCE OF DISEASE IN HONGKONG.
BY WILLIAM HUNTER, MD., C.M. Aberd. Government Bacteriologist, Honghong.
[Continued from page 5.3-
TYPHOID.
The incidence of typhoid fever amongst the Chinese population of Hongkong is difficult to estimate. Europeans frequently suffer from the disease. With the Chinese, however, the information regarding the disease is meagre Typhoid is a disease of insidious onset. Th Chinese residents of langkong, should the feel sick, quickly 1.ave the Colony "for their country." Thus it becomes a matter of ex
treme difficulty to obtain accurate results in regard to the prevalence of enteric fever antongst the natives. We have no records of any value in the Chinese hospitals in Hong kong. Again, the natives rarely enter a hos pitni but "to die." Post-mbrim examination of hospital cases is avoided as much as possible An deference to the religious feelings of the
people,
At the public mortualy, however, excellent
• opportunities of studying the incidence of disease are obtained., During the past year a number of cases of typhoid fever have been found by post-mortem examination. A detail Sed account of the results abrained is published. in the Annual Report of the Government Bacterologist of Hongkong for 1904. It shows that enteric fever is by no m ans n rare disease amongst the Chineet. It oc ura un frequently in adults as in children, and further, the theory of acquired immunity from typhoid in child. hood is not supported by the evidence obtain- Ved by actual post-mortem examination.
TUBERCLE.
The Chinese would appear to be extremely susceptible in fubercular diseaus. Throughout ~Hongkong tuberculosis, in its various mani. festations, is rampant. Tubercular meningitis is rare, but acute generalised tuberculosis in young children, and phthisis in young adalis and the wage earning population, are wide. spread, and "contribute largely towards the annual ingrtality. Again, the course of tuber. cular infections anongst the natives is much more actue than that found in Europeans. At the public mortuary where over 2,050 autopsies are held annualy, types of tubercular disease are found which, in their severity and diftribu tion throughout the Lody, exceed even the mort pronounced cases of the disease met with in Europe.

The ravages used in China through renereal diseases are very apparent in longkong. In China no effis are made to control these diseases, and they become a terrible scourge to all classes of the population. Indeed, for certain districts the term "generalised syphili sation" would be correct. "Port-mortem evid· | Ardova, for Kutchimotiu, ence of syphilis is quite commun, and gummata | Hanoi, for Hoihow," and var ous aneurismus are occasionally found Kamer, for Canton,

In adult, sive or uropean, this symp (tóm of so many «ffections is prevalent and tre, quently a very disturbing factor in the life of the Hongkong resident, Amongst the Chinese disorders of this nature bound, and ure dee to ordinary causes, a. ignorance, imprger feed ing, unhygienic arroundings, and the like One may truly say, after a mudy of the Eastern mative, that the determination of the incidence of this class of ditense depends upon the geographical distribution of education in the factors productive of normal physiological pro- cesses of health. Dytintery is also common in Hongkong. It prevails mostly in chronic form and does not figure largely as a direct cause of death. I canno agree with Clemow, who states that it is one of the comnionest diseases onder treatment at the Government Civil Hospital in Hongkong. Caxes are frequently recaided, but not in excess of other common dincases.
RESPIRATORY DISORDERS. Respiratory diseaser account for 20 to 30 per cent of the totul Chinese deaths in Hong kong. Bronchitic affections are frequently #found to be the causes of death in children and adults. Amopget Europeans paeumonia in

Cases of liver abscers are met with. Its in- cidence is far below that of Cochin China, where the disease accounts for nearly 4 per cent. of the mortality from afl causes. I Hongkong it is about as frequent in nativo 21 in Europeans.
On the mainland and in Canton leprosy abounds, but little of the "disease is seen actually in Hongkong. The neighbouring provinces of Kwang-tung and Fokien are described as the cradle of the disease in
China.
Blackwater fever is never scan in Hong-

Cérebro-spinal fever is only occasionally met with, and mvustes, scurls fever and chicken por, are scarcely ever in evidence, Unless imported. In more northern latitudes, -however, zg, Shanghai, such diseases prevail
as in Europe.
Diphtheria accounts for very few cases per andum.. It is usually imported from some neighbouring seaport,

Rickets is one of the rarest diseases in Hong kang. Most Chinese babies are, breast fed. They live amonger filib, and many children zaraly breathe pura air.
