It appears that the shroff in question had been in the employment of the Bank at Hongkong for a considerable number of years. He was well-connected and was regarded as daily passed through his hands, but of course the excellent, system of checking accounts. which is in operation at the Bank precluded the possibility of any robbery on the Goudie scale being commited. Since then, apart from a succession of articles in various tropical publications practically nothing has been attempted to bring the study of this science on a level with other

At the same time, much useful information has been obtained from the writings of David

DENGUE,
During the past year or two nure or less severe epidemics of dengue have been pre- valent in Hongkong. In 1901 the disease was severe; almost all the Europeans contracting the infection. In 1903 and in 1904 there have been slight outbursts of the disease, but the number of persons attacked was small. Dengue fever in its epidemic spread resembles influenza. its extensions are marked by a great ir. regularity. From all accounts the disease has so far been limited to the tropical belt, with

It is reported however, that the sum abstracted by the 'shraff is $52,000, although there are rumours that the total amount which cannot be accounted for reaches $60,000. Wherever the alleged thief has gone it should not be a difficult task to find the defauPer. He had about a day's start, so that if he has left Hongkong-and there is an idea that he is still in the Colony--he could not have gone much farther than Canton. Permanency as regards the geographical distribution of disease cannot be final. Many diseases. have, so far, not reached their limits of diffusion. It would appear that, with the inroads made by civilisation, diseases, at one time confined to certain areas of the globe, are spread broadcast over the surface of the earth The diffusion of small-px, cholera, plague &c., has only to be mentioned in order to emphasise this distribution through the establishment of close international commner. cial enterprise.
SMALL-POX.
Small-pox recurs annually in Hongkong. It makes its appearance during the colder sea- sons of the year.
Its incidence is small amongst the resident population. This disease is one of the commonest in China, especially in the northern parts of the country. To Hong- kong, however, excluding the large number of imported cases, the disease scarcely ever assumes serious proportions.
