A ROMANCE OF THE MEKUNG.

HOW THE TAMDur ni "conspiRACY "

IN FRANCE ORIGINATED.

Those out in this part of world who have read the sensational telegrams, hypotheses. and contradictions carcerning the exploded Tamburini conspiracy which was brought to light last month in France, will now learn with interest that but for a love affair on the banks of the Mekong some years ago. M. Tam- burini might never have achieved his recent fame as a modern Catiline, That such wa the case, and that the gay Tamburin “cut out" the equally gay Prince Henry of Orlearns in the affections of the Prince's best girl while the trio were wandering about, exploring the great river of Indo-China, may he gathered from the chronicles of that graceful scandal monger, the Paris correspondent of Truik, se et forth in the latest issue of that paper. He elis the story thus:-

The Royalists and Bonapartists affect to ook-pech the Tamburini conspiracy as in- edible because "really too absurd. No man commanding intellect or leading position been caught in it." Whenever did a mas find mind become a conspirator? Con Arators are generally men of rudimentary inds, unable to ree the complexity of the ate of things they hope to mend by a "coup le force. Mazzini is one of the very few ex eptions I can think of; and what could he ave effected had there not been round the Ing of Sardinia statesmen of the highest rder, and Arousing Garibaldi who acted bove board? In France, where each man is free to abuse the Government on a platform,

A conspiracy such as the one Tamburini #pught to organise might, under present circumstances, give a dangerous shock. He,

as 1 imagined he would, turns out, to be a grandson of the tenor. of his name and a nephew of the Harecaia Lopez. There is at oncs something operatic and South American in bis ways and notions. Tamburini learned

English, French, and Italian as mother son- gues, and received, with apparent advantage, an excellent education at the College Chaptal and the f ycee Condorect.

a hopeful future, had a fine figure, handsome face, winning inanaem, a delightful voice, and a sanguine témper which made his company cheering. Indiscretion was his. weak point, Hfter he rose from the ranks, brother officers, eeing in him a lady killer, grew jealous, and became often enemies. He thought it fun to eclipss them in society and make them feel amall beside him. He took a young lady from Prince Henri d'Orleans when they were in Indo-China, She was the daughter of a First President of a Court of Appeal in France, con- ceived a romantic attachment for the Prince, Toped with him diested as a page, and went the Makong with him in his exploration of hat river. She got on with him well enough ntil she met Tamburini, when she told the ince that she no longer loved him well. ough to close the door against the handsome Ecer, who had gained, by feats of heroism, rels at Langson, Prince Henri asked to be down easy, and it was agreed, as he felt rvously depressed, to accustom him gradu y to the second rank in her kind regard. he ended by finding this irksome, and claim

her right to a complete separation from the ince. He consented, and they went home in esame steamer, Henri d'Orleans paying, asan act of justice, the lady's passage. He seemed under the spell of Tamburini on the homeward passage, and wished to pilot-him in Orleanist society. There Gulnare died from the after-

She lived in the Chateau of Sully-Rony between Mantes and, Rouen, looking on the Seine. All the consignments of military articles to’Courbevoie Vand Puteau came up the river, nobody knew hence, and the steam launches freighted th them aftor midnight. This Mme. baudy was a multi millionaire, though less althy than Mme. jules Lebaudy. She was dently auxlous up to the eve of death for the verthrow of the Republic-as it now exists, At any rate, a tremendous row could not fail to play the passage through the Chamber of the Church and State Separation Bill.
