THE LIGHTING OF THE WEST RIVER.

Ever since the negotiations on the subject of opening up the West River to foreign trade were brought to a successful issue by Sir Clonde Macdonald, during his first year of office in Peking, navigation on this im- portant waterway has been fraught with con- siderable danger by reason of the absence of lights and beacons. Indeed, after a lapse of eight years, shipmasters have still to relyi on methods most primitive, and doubtless in use by junkmen generations ago, to en- sure a safe passage on this treacherous river, and it is most amusing to find that, within a few miles of this great shipping centre, rocks, and sandbanks are known to

| difficulty in devising a scheme whereby the cost of maintaining artificial aids to naviga tion shall be borne by the Imperial Mari time Customs, to which undoubtedly accrues by far the larger portion of profit brought about by expanding trade and increasing tonnage cutering and leaving the river.

"NEW INDUSTRY FOR

HUNGRONG,

THE AUSTRALIAN TIMBER TRADE.

An industry which promises to become one

of the most important in Hongkong and the Far East generally is the in seduction of a timber connection with Australia by an expert in Forestry Ms. A. H. de C. Hamilton. The inauguration of the trade between Australia and Hongkong began about two years ago when Mr. Hamilton first went to Australia in' the interests of the timber industry. It was recognised that Hongkong is largely dependent, if not entirely, upon outside sources for the supply of timber for scaffolding, piles, and all building operations, and in addition to Borneo and Sinin, Australia has been looked to as a country which can supply the character of the timber required. Having this knowledge, Mr. Hamilton who had previously been engaged in the timber trade, proceeded to Australia, land ing at Port Darwin, whence he went into the ,bush and surveyed the forestry of the country.

Under the Northern Territory Land Act it is necessary to obtain a license for prosecuting the timber industry, but that proved no obstacle. Mr. Hamilton proceeded afo miles along the coast having in his employment ten Chinamen and two white men. In litila or no time, he had felled 3,000 logs for local consumption, The railway department was approached and | asked how much timber they wanted for the next ten years. They promptly gave Mr. Hamilton a contract whịch in still being car- ried out.
