NOTICE.

Mr. Mackinder said that, whatever their difference on other points, every one would agree that this Empire was to be held together by two bonds-the bond of interest and the bond of sentiment. He took it also that it

would be generally agreed that for any im. aginative manifestation of interest, or any fruitful sentiment, knowledge was essential, He took it also that that knowledge must not be only pular, or of the arid statistical kind, but that it must be living, and so far as possible, it must partake of the nature of a personal ex perience. We loved our old school because there was imprinted on our memories for life a bundle of images, and if we were to make our Empire live for the great mass of the peo- ples with it there must be something of that character. Since space forbade that it should be actually personal experience, the idea was that they should make it as nearly as possible of the same living, vivid, lasting, and stimulating character. It was with those ideas that that scheme was originally suggested by his old 1392 friend Mr. Sadler during his tenure of office of director of inquiries to the Board of Education. The idea was taken up by the Colonial Office, when Mr. Chamberlain was Secretary for the Colonies, and was afterwards considered by a small committee, of which Lord Meath, Sir Office, Mr. Sadler, Dr. R. T. Roberts, Mr. C. Clementi Smith, Mr. Lucas, of the Colonial Struthers, and himself were members. The first draft of the syllabus of slides, which was still in draft form in their hands that afternoon, was drawn by that committee, and then, with the view to making a small experiment, it was submitted to the three Crown colonies of Hongkong, the Straits Settlements, and Ceylon. They had taken the lead in the matter, and they were now in the position of asking the other colonies to join in it. They endeavoured to make this nation intelligible as regarded its ideals, and to show to those of our fellow- subjects who were abroad that we wished to be good and to do good; and, on the other hand,

spake of that very question of lectures as being Lord Ranfurly said that three years ago he very necessary to the Empire. In New Zen- land 47 per cent. of the population were under the age of 21, and though we know thoroughly well in every way the loyalty of the parents, done so that the children should be brought up we know that something was necessary to be in the same way as the parcuts. As years passed this would become more necessary. It was a most urgent thing that we should try to unite the Empire not alone by the bond of interest, but also by that of smypathy, (Cheers.)

YARN MARKET.

In their report, dated 13th instant, Messrs. Cawasjee Pallanice and Co. write:-Since the issue of our last report on the 30th ultimo, the depression, in our Yarn Market has been more pronounced. The anxiety of holders to realize consequent on the incessant decline in the buyers from the Market in the first part of the rates of the raw material, has frightened away interval. Subsequently a concession in rates of

S2 to $4 pèr hale induced them to operate but only to a small exicat and in special chops under country orders. Holders are still anxious sellers and would yield to still greater conces sions if any large orders can be placed, but dealers are acting very cautiously and buying only for immediate wants, whilst their previous purchases at higher rates are being very slowly cleared. No. 1or. and No. 125, a moderate business has been done in these counts at a decline of 52 to $4 per bale. No. 16. show a few small sales at a decline of $2 per bate, and No. 20s. are very dificult to move especially in medium and common spinnings, sales showing superior tickets at a concession of $1 to $4 per a few insignificant transactions in special bale. The market closes weak. Sales during the past fortnight comprise of about 1,995 bales of No. 105.; 975 bales of No. 125. ; 635 bales of No. 16.; and 425 bales of No. zos.; in all aboul 4,030 bales. Arrivals per steamers Catherine Aptar, Ischia, and Namang, of about 10,200 bales. Shipments to Shanghai and Northern Ports about 2,000 bales. The unsold Stock is estimated at about 29,000 bales.

FORTNIGHTLY REPORT.

Indian Yarn.-Our market has gone on from bad to worse. The tightness of money amongst the natives, combined with the incessant drop in the values of raw cotton and a steady high exchange, have all greatly contributed to keep buyers aloof from the market, and another heavy drop of $t to Sz per bale, on the part of importers has induced an insignificant business both in spot goods and to arrive in special superior tickets. The market closes very quiet, Total sales are 4,000 bales. Shipment 2,500 bales. Arrivals 10,100 bales.

WAMPOLE'S PREPARATION are laid in sincerity and honour, the knowledge of which on the part of the people explains its popularity and success. There is nothing to disguise or conceal. It was not dreamed out,

on the solid principles of applied medical or discovered by accident; it was studied out,

science. It is palatable as honeyland 'contains all the nutritive and curative properties of Pure Cod Liver Oil, extracted by us from fresh cod Hypophosphites and the Extracts of Malt and livers, combined with the Compound Syrup of Wild Cherry. This remedy is praised by all. who have employed it in any of the diseases it is recommended to relieve and cure, and is effective from the first dose. In Anemia, Scrofula, Nervous and General Debility, In- fluenza, La Grippe, and Throat and Lung Troubles, it is a specific. It is precisely what it is said to be, and has won the confidence of the public on that basis. You may resort to it with a faith and hope that arise from the history of what it has done for others. Dr. Thos. Hunt Stucky says: "The continued use of it in my practice, convinces me that it is the most palatable, least nauseating, and best prepara- tion now on the market." One bottle proves its intrinsic value. "You cannot be dis appointed in it." Sold by chemists throughout the world.

we must show them that we were strong. The lecturer then ran rapidly through slides selected from each of the seven lectures included in the syllabus, which are as follows:-Lecture 1. The journey from the East to London. Lecture Il-London, the Imperial City. Lecture III. -Scenery of the United Kingdom. Lecture IV-Historic centres and their influence on national life. Lecture VI.-Great towns, the Industries, and Commerce. Lecture Vil.-- Defences of the Empire. This course of lectures is designed for use primarily in the Eastern Colonies. It is intended that the lectures should be of a simple character, such as may be given to classes at the top of elementary schools, or, with some modifications, to adult hearers. Each lecture may well supply several hours' lessons, being 'intended, to ba the text for teaching and a guide as to the method of teaching, and not simply to be repeated word for word in a single hour. All the slides are good and have been selected with a view to instruct as well as to interest. Some of them, as for instance two of a sunset over the Thames at London, photographed in calours, are extremely beautiful

The Lecturer at the conclusion of his lecture said that they might in the long run quite pass- ibly build up an empire of which all the parts should be free and all willing to join in the maintenance of the Fleet, which was of the very essence of this Empire. It seemed to him indeed, that they might evolve something in the nature of a bushido, that they might poss [:oibly convey the idea of defence, order, and free

dom to all the various races, who should each their nationality. (Cheers.)
