SIGNALS.

A NEW CODE:

We have received from the Hongkong? Observatory a few code of meteorological" signals which comes into force at Hongkong on New Year's Day. They are the same as those at present in use at Shanghai, and will be hoisted on the mast beside the time;ball at. Kowloon Point for the Information of masters of vessels leaving the port. They do not peces- sarily imply that bad weather is expected. The signals are as follows:

A cone point upwards indicatos a typhoon to the North of the Colony:

A code point upwards and drum below in-- dicates a typhoon to the North-East of the Colony,

A drum indicates a typhoon to the Eait of the Colony.

A cone point: downwards and drum below indicates a typhoon to the South-East of the ' Colony.

A cone point downwards indicates a typhoon ( to the South of the Colony.

A cone point downwards and ball below indicates a typhoon to the South-West of the Colony,

A ball indicates a typhoon to the West of

the Colony.

A cone point upwards and ball below indicates. a typhoon to the North-West of the Colony.

Red Signals indicate that the 'centro is believed to be more than 300 miles AWAY

from

the Colony,

Black Bignals Indicate that the centre is belleved to be less than 300 miles away from the Colony,

The above signals will, as heretofore, be hoisted only when typhoons exist in such pasi- tions or are moving in such directions that in. formation regarding them is considered to be of importance to the Colony or to shipping leav |ing the harbour.
