A new disinfecting station with offices for the medical officer of health at Kowloon should be finished in a couple of months. The kindly desire of any of the institutions in the Colony to furnish the unprovided and the miserable with one day of abundance and comfort during the year is altogether worthy and commendable; it is in the true Christian spirit. Happiness is the key-note of Yule- tide, and this comes only out of the giving of the best that is in us--one might say, the SPIRIT MERCHANTS, giving of ourselves for the happiness of all.

It is noteworthy that on nine Christmas Days, Samuel Pepys, the famous diarist, never once missed attending church, and indeed on some occasions he went more than once in the day. It is officially stated, however, that there is no truth in that story.. It is admitted that a crack has appeared, but it was not altogether unexpected and as provision had been made for it no change in the original design will be necessary. Mr. R. A. B. Ponsonby, at one time Private Secretary to Sir West Ridgeway, and at present P. S. to H. E. Sir Matthew Nathan, has arrived at Colombo from Sydney, by the P. and O. mail steamer Macedonia and is a guest at Queen's House. We regret to state that Mr. Ponsonby is in poos health. He told a reporter of a Ceylon contemporary that he contracted bronchitis in Hongkong, and was obliged to take a trip to Australia for the banefit of his health. On arrival there it was his intention to go back to Hongkong, but on the advice of Dr. Chalmers he means to remain in the island for a fort- night, and was to go up-country.
We hope the bracing climate in the hills will be the means of restoring him to bis wonted health.

LOCAL AND GENERAL,
We are now approaching the fire season, and in view of the numerous inquiries which THE big Japanese breweries are contemplating usually follow an outbreak may hope that an amalgamation,
the so-called "accidental" conflagration will soon be a thing of the past. In the case of
tions against them, for though the trucks are the same that have been in the bands of the police previously, the men in charge are quite unknown to them. Again, when they leave the truck at the side of the road they arrange with the shop-keepers, in front of whose skops they are left, to say-for a consideration--that the trucks are in their service, and thus they are protected. The remedy would appear to be to bave the privately owned trucks numbered with properly licensed men in charge bearing the corresponding numbers and with their photographs on the licences, as in the case of vehicle drivers, and for public trucks, that is, those for general hire, to pay a much higher licence fee per annum, so that they would thus
