"PAUL BEAU" AND "CHARLES HARDOUIN"

TO RESUME THEIR RUN.

After some four months of enforced idleness

the se. Paul Beau and Churles Hardouin are about to resume their run from Hongkong to Canton, commencing with the Paul Beats which will leave for Canton on Tuesday, the 27th'|' inst., starting from her old wharf at-10-o'clock that night, and being followed the next night by the Charles Harduin, This new line will be run under the naine of the "Compagnie Francaise de Navigation et des Constructions Navales," the head office of which is in Paris. A telegram was received in town this morning by Mr. L. Bridou, acting agent of the Compagnie des Messageries Maritimes, stating that his company had been appointed agents for the new line, and requesting him to take over the managership, and start the steamers running without delay, at the old time-table dates, hence the Paul Beau's being commissioned to

be negotiated, but at every turn new natural beauties unfold themselves while here and there the busy harbour looking its best peepa through the tangle of trees and rocky battresses, A monotain rivulet carols down a gorge, below the pathway, and in these bright days when an English spring morning seems to pale by contrast with Hongkong's clear atmosphere and bracing breezes, the ascent is wonderfully beautiful. An auis in colours would be charmed at every turn and winding of the path,

and deem it in the end but a filing prelude to the beauty of the mansion which crowns the

kill.

A BEAUTIFUL SITE.

It is a common-place to say that Sir Paul Chater's new building is situated on one of the most beautiful spurs of the Hill District. Such a comment has been mide so frequently and in respect of so many other buildings, when the facts have not altogether warranted the assertion, that it has lost its savour; but here is an instance when the charm of the surroundings cannot be gainsaid. In the depths lies Hongkong, enveloped sometimes in a gray transparent haze, but in the heights, the ever changing lights give new colours to every vista. The mansion itself stands out clear-cut and cameo-like on the crest, backed by a rugged hill which rises still higher till in the early morning the topmost crest of all is lost in mist.

INITIAL DIFFICULTIES,

A considerable time has passed since Sir take up her zun oace more as above-mentioned. Paul Chater first decided to erect a mansion It will be rentembered that these two steamers

Negotiations proceeded, and have, now been' brought to a successful issue as above related, and passengers and shippers alike are to be congratulated on the resumption of their old run by these two fine steaners, which have been fully described in these columns. The same firm have in contemplation a line from Canton to Wachow, and as an initial start a small steamer is about to be built by them for this sun. A further line touching at Macau may also later on be added to this firm's opera tions, but that is a matter still in the dim future of possibilities.

SHIPPING JETSAM. ·

The Empress of China has gone into dock. The Pacific mail liner Manchuria, which came in from San Francisco this mornings brought to the urient a heavy cargo of freight amounting to nearly 10,000 tons. One hundred and seventy-five saloon passengers were booked to sail by her the fist including the popular Tom MacKay, passenger agent in the Far East for the Pacific mail and other steamship companies. Four hundred Chinese were to sail on her for China, the unusual number being accoun.. ted for at this time in view of the Chinese New Year, which calls many Celestials home. Three hundred japanese were also to sail, most of them being destined for the war in Manchu , ria.

Mr. Frank E, Beadneli, late chief officer of the Occidental and Oriental steamer Coplic, has been appointed to command the liner, and is now on his way out from Liverpool to take charge of the steamer. He will succeed Cap tain Frank H. Armstrong, who died at Yoko hama on November sad of typhoid malaria, when the vessel was en route to 'Frisco from | Hongkong.

SIDE ENTRANCE AND OTHER CONVENIENCES.

At the rear of the dining-room there is a spacious tiled pantry, and a commodious kitchen, which is furnished with an up-to-date cooking apparatus, and a high pressure boiler for supplying hot water to every part of the house. The kitchen and adjacent rooms have the floors tiled, while the walls also up to the roof are of white, glazed sanitary tiles, so that everything should be spotlessly clean and free from the insistent microbe. There are the usual scullerits and such-like rooms, all built after the same pattern.
