KUROPATKIN'S DANGER.
The telegram from our London corres- pondent announcing the receipt in St. Petersburg of a wire from General Kuropat- kin requesting the immediate despatch of six army corps for the seat of war tends to verify Reuter's report that the Press at home consider the position of the Russian leader as one of terrible danger, with possibilities pointing to the destruction of his army. Until a few day's ago there was an ominous silence regarding the progress of events around Linoyang where it was felt that a most serious situation must exist, and when on Friday the Consul for Japan was able to announce that the Russians were retreating towards the old Manchurian city, closely followed by the Japanese divisions, it appeared positive that, within a few hours, actual assault on the Rossian headquarters must commence. We have since learned that Liaoyang has fallen, and no doubt the enemy is now in full retreat. For a month past General Kuroki, with some hundred thousand men, has been behind the Russian forces, and General Oku, with an army of about 50,000, has worked on their front, while,

A MACAO CONSULAR
APPOINTMENT.
It is reported from Macao that the British Minister at Peking has appointed the Acting Commissioner of the Imperial Chinese Cus toms, stationed at Lappa, to act as British vice consul at that port, during the absence on leave of the holder of the substantive appointment. This appointment, it is believed, has met with strong opposition from H. E. the Governor of Hongkong on the ground of the anomaly that must arise from such a position, and the impossiblity of two such appointments be ing properly worked by one and the same man. The appointment bas, however, according to the report, been made, and it nowonly remains to be seen whether it will be confirmed. Should it be true we feel sure that H.E. The President of National Assembly, who is also acting as Regent, and who holds the Dalai Lama's seal visited Colonel Younghusband and confessed that the Tibetans had been beaten in battle, and that the officials could no longer hope to impress men for fighting pur- poses. The army had dispersed except a few levies, who were waiting for their pay. The only hope for the Tibetans lay in diplomacy. Questioned about the impertinent despaich referred to by the Amban, be frankly said that the despatch was a sample of Tibetan diplomacy. They asked for much in the hope of getting a little.
The great trouble is that the Lama, who is still in a monastery eight marches away, is shifting the responsibility on to the National Assembly and vice varia. However, the Amban and the leading officials have written to the Dalai Lama, asking him to return, as there is no further fear of fighting.
The Mounted Infantry, reconnoitring-eight miles up a side valley, surprised an encamp ment of Tibetan soldiers, and took 64 prisoners with arms. The prisoners made no attempt to fight. They are big-boned Kham warriors and Hongkong General Chamber of Commerce,'
