case of the

bed ow the wish being father to the thought During the period, however, which has elapsed since the date when Mr. Cowie gave utterance to the expression referred to, certain valuable discoveries have been made which, when fur. ther developed, may result in the absolute verification of his prophecy.

Hay, of which we have already written at some In the first place the Manganese in Marudu length, is daily being proved to exist in im mente quantities, so much so that the Mineral Syndicate, we understand, will are long com. mence regular shipments of the ore from the country. A railway, about seven miles in length, has been in course of constraction from the mines to the coast in Marudu Bay, where also a pier of considerable dimensions will shortly be completed. From this mineral pro duct alone it is reasonable to assume that North Borneo will derive considerable benefit, quite irrespective of the great impetus to trade generally which it will impart to the district in

which it exists.

It is curious that as far back as 1881, Mt. Witi, in his diary, speaks of coming across a [754 black stone in Marudu Bay, and stating that it was spoken of by the natives as a kind of coal.

HE NIPPON YUSEN KAISHA are prepared. during suspension of their Trans-Pacific Service and until further notice, to BOOK CARGO and ISSUE BILLS OF LADING to SEATTLE, WASH., VICTORIA, B.C., and PACIFIC COAST PORTS, also to OVER LAND POINTS in the UNITED STATES and CANADA in connection with the GREAT NORTHERN RAILWAY FROM SEAT TLE as hitherto, by the Steamers of the NORTHERN PACIFIC S. SC, BOSTON

However, on the recent re-discovery of this black stone by Mr. Canarvon, who practically found it in his back garden, and on the advent of the Mineral Syndicate, a test was made of it with the result that it was found to be Manganese, a mineral of great commercial value. Resides this, there has recently been discovered in the same neighbourhood anotbar mineral in large quantities, the price of which commercially far exceeds that of Manganese, We refer to Chromite. On the shores of Marudu Bay extending over a large area there are considerable surface deposits of black sand, which have for generations been washed

this theme, for we are naturally elated at the fact that this further discovery only tends to confirm our belief, expressed in a former issue, of the great secreted wealth of British North Borneo. It is true that so far as this Chramite is concerned, there was never any real secretiveness about it, since it has been exposed to view and has been trodden by the foot of man probably from time immemorial. I was only the expert eye of the whiteman, Mr. Robertson, which was

subject to the eye and the craft of an expert, itsellis, however, sufficient to show that unless there may he, and probably are, many other valuable minerale in the country which are continuously exposed to the view of the layman and passed by as worthless. In addition to the Chromite in Marudu Bay, another dis covery was recently made by the Mineral Syndicate in the Labuk Hills, on the East Coast about 30 or 40 miles from Sandakan. This discovery is iron ore, of which Mr. Hone states about 1 millions tons are in sight, and the assay of samples of which show a yield of

out how unusually rich this iron ore is. So far as we are aware there is no place in the world which such a high percentage of iron can be shown..

In view of the close proximity to Sandakan of this latest and valuable discovery, it should cheer the hearts of those who have interests in Sandakan itself since the developments of this iron industry must perforce result in conferring great benefits on the present capital of the country, and thus add greatly to the value of property in and around, shall we say, the City. Moreover, the coal which was some time aro discovered by Mr. Phillips in Cowie Harbour is now on the eve of being worked, and will [677 presently, constitute one of the greatest exports of the country. Seeing that the scene of these coal deposits is no more than about 200 miles of waterway from Sandakan Harbour, and that the iron ore deposits are situate about sa milas from the same point, it is surely not too op- timistic to suggest that in the near future wa shall see the establishment in the outskirts of, Sandakan of furnaces for the manufacture of Iron on a large scale. The institution of such an industry will necessitate the building of a railway from the Labuk Bills to Sandakan Harbour which in itself will be a most welcoma boon to the inhabitants of Sandakan.

THE HONGKONG AND CHINA GAS COMPANY beg to notify the public that Messrs. KUNG HINGE Co., 474, Des Voeux Road West, are the SOLE AGENTS for the Sale of the Company's COKE and TAR and that all Orders should be sent to the said [39 Agents direct.

Altogether then our prospects were never so bright as they are at present. With Manganese a Marudu Bay, Iron in the Labuk Hills and Coat in Cowie Harbour, we have, in a Comparatively small área, all the attributes for. the Creation of a great Steel Industry, and ses ing that each of those threa attributes is prac tically on the coast, the question of freight which usually tends to cripple auch industries cannot arise.
