HONGKONG METEOROLOGICAL

SIGNALS

A NEW CODE.

We have received from the Hongkong Observatory a new code of meteorological signals which comes into force at Hongkong on New Year's Day. They are the same as those at present in use at Shanghai, and will be hoisted on the mast beside the time-balf a Kowloon Point for the information of masters of vessels leaving the port. They do not neces sarily imply that bad weather is expected. The signals are as follows:---

A cone point upwards indicates a typhoon to the North of the Colony..

A cone point upwards fand drum below in- dicates a typhoon to the North-East of the Colony,

A drum indicates a typhoon to the East of the Colony,

A cone point downwards and drym below indicates a typhoon to the South-East of the Colony,

A cone point downwards indicates a typhoon to the South of the Colony.

A cone point downwards and ball below indicates a typhoon to the South-West of the Colony.

A ball indicates a typhoon to the West of the Colony,

A cone point upwards and ball below indicates a typhoon to the North-West of the Colony.

Red Signals indicate that the centre is believed to be more than 300 miles away from the Colony.

Black Signals indicate that the centre is believed to be less than 300 miles away from the Colony.

The above signals will, as heretofore, be hoisted only when typhoons exist in such posi- tions or are moving in such directions that in- formation regarding them is considered to be of importance to the Colony or to shipping leav. ing the harbour.

NIGHT SIGNALS.

Two lanterns hoisted vertically indicate bad weather in the Colony and that the wind is expected to veer.

Two lanterns hoisted horizontally indicate bad weather in the Colony and that the wind is expected to back.

The signals are repeated on the flagstaff of the Godown Company at Kowloon, and also,
