· JAPAN'S FIRST MOVE. Notwithstanding the optimistic, rumours which reach us from Russian sources, it is evident from the extensive preparations going on and japan's last move in placing a press-censorship on telegrams, that war may break out at any moment. Though specula- tions are often of little value as it is always the unforseen that happens, it is of interest to consider in what manner

AN UNSATISFACTORY FORM.

Sitting in Honkruptcy Jurladiction at the Supreme Court this morning, the Chief Justice, Sir W. M. Goodman, beard an application by -- Mr. E. J. The assets, he said, were in- sufficient to pay the debts of the deceased, and/ there were severn! actions commencing against the executor, as executor of the estato. "It' seemed to him that the only way of dealing with the case was to administer it in Hank-*** ruptcy. The assets were $21,000, of which $12,000 was actual cash.

Some other Chinese tatlymen, a number of Preventive Officers, and the Pursers of the vessel were examined and cross-examined at some length in regard to the mode of tallying, the position of the hatches, and some other

Mr. Maflin, the Senior Inspector of the Cus toms Preventive service, said that one of the Preventive Officers informed him that chest No. 5187 of E. D. vessel surreptitiously. He also stated that the Excise Department had found five balls of opium similar to what was shipped three days alter the shipment. There were no chests lying in the Excise godown.

Mr. Hastings said that the debtors were in China, and were willing to come down for examination, but the Chinese officials, owing ??? to some proceedings in Canton, would not

allow them to leave.

The Chief Justice. I have no affidavits to that effect.
