The European population of Hongkong can- not be accused of being backward in their manifestations of sentiment which, from the cominencement of our en, have accompaniert the passing of the Old Year and the birth of the New. A mist was hanging over the water, so that the view of the harbour and its background of steep crested hills put on a fairy-land aspect, and the outlines of the numerous vessels moored in the bay lost their sharpness and were rendered indefinite. It was like looking through a gauze screen which softened and toned the vista. To onc hand lay the merchant steamers, scemingly asleep and at rest on the oil-like surface of the still sea, their mast-head and saloon-lights twinkling through the haze tel- ling however of the life that lay within. Behind them, close"down upon the surface of the water, could be seen a myriad of sparkles from the lanterns of countless junks and sam- pans, and it seemed as though the Milky Way bad come down to whisper to the ocean.
