THE CABINET CRISIS.

With the retirement from the Cabinet of Mr. Joseph Chamberlain, Mr. C. T. Ritchie and Lord George. Hamilton the Ministerial crisis, which has been threaten- ing on the political horizon at home, has burst, and the shower of resignations that has fallen is but the expected corollary of the event. After the King's speech from the throne leaders of the opposition declared a conviction that the present Parliament would never meet again and that a dissole- tion and general election would take place in the autumn. For months past the situa BLEND tion, has been one of uncertainty, and as the session advanced and the, legislative proposals and tactics of the Government were exposed to view, an impression pre- vailed that the Cabinet "was riding to fall." The Education Bill and the Irish Land Bill, of which so much was heard when Parliament met, have been almost completely set aside by the final and crowning issue of Mr. Chamber- lain, whose proposals for the establishment of a system of customs duties on imports:

He would also like to remark that in the early part of the case the documents were described by the de- fendant in his affidavit as promissory notes, and it was only later on that he found out that they were acknowledgments of indebtedness. There were two reasons why he could not conceive that these should be forgeries. If the same man was Chi-going to make additions it seemed to him that he would have been a fool if he did not try to keep the writing closer, and if the time had been altered why was it not made payment on demand instead of a month hence?
