CHANGES ON NUB STEAMERS.

POPULAR CAPTAIN RESIONS.

Writing on August 11th the Tacoma Ledger said-Captain J. McT. Panton, master of the steamship Victoria, of the Northern Pacific Steamship Company, who has been spending a vacation in the mountains, has resigned his sposition with the company to take up the work of marine surveyor in Tacoma harbour. He will act in this capacity for the Balfour, Guthrie Company, the North-western Warehouse Com- pany, Kerr, Gifford & Company and a number of other large grain and shipping firms of the city.

Captain Panton's resignation leads to n complete shifting about of the masters of the three Northern Pacific liners. The Victoria, from which the emptain resigns, is the senior vessel of the line by reason of its speed, the Olympia and Tacoma following next in order. Captain Andrew Dixon, of the Taconu, now in the harbour, will lay over this trip; the steamer being taken nut by Captain M. Ridley, pro- moted from his position as chief officer of the vessel, having been the senior chief officer of the line. Captain Dixon wil iake command of the Victorin, the next liner due in, upon her arrival and will sail her to Yokohama, where he will meet the Olympir on the latter's return trip to Tacoma and an exchange of commands will be made, Cap'ain Dixon taking charge of the Olympic and Captain John Trubridge

command of the Victoria.

Captain Panton has been sailing with the Oriental lines from l'acific coast for the past fifteen years, and is said by steamship men to have crossed the Pacific Ocean more times than any other man alive He has been with the Northern Pacific line almost since its, or ganization, and sailed with the Canadian Pacific steamship line several years before that time. He is one of the best known sea captains on the Const and his many friends wish him well in his new office ashore as hatine surveyor, the position in the port of Tacoma under the arrangemen's made by Captain Panton being an excellent one.

He points out that, according to reli- able statistics, only two-fifths of the population of the United States use any sort of tea, and that an excellent field is rpen for the exploita tion of the article, which could be worked by the tea merchants of the world, not under com. ditions of cut-threat competition, but with an understanding between the merchants that would ensure a reasonable profit; and avoid any chance of loss which has been the case for many years past. As this is thought to be worthy of serious consideration, the writer re commends that delegates from the tea-produc- ing countries of the world should meet and discuss the question.
