The Philippines may propare for the new money system. Within a week or so probably, the Commission will emit a large quantity of the new pesos, and the gold basis will be in effect, reports the Cablenews.

QUEENSLAND COASTAL TRADE.

At a meeting of the council of the Brisbane Chamber of Commerce Mr. L. H. Spence in- troduced the subject of the disability under which Queensland shippers laboured in trading with Thursday Island. Owing to the heavy port dues, China boats could not take cargo from Brisbane to nor her ports, including Thursday Island; but Sydney, Melbourne, and other parts ousie Queensland (being foreign ports, China ir Japan vessets could there take carge, and supply the northern port, to the disadvantage of Irisbane, Townsville, and Cooktown.

The time is ripe for the change, and the .esos are here. Now presents itself the question of how commerce and especially petty commerce, and labour will adapt itself to the' change. The pero will be worth fifty cents gold. Its value is certain. The Mexican, or Spanish Filipina dollar is now valued at about forty-one and a half cents,

Will the small merchant, the cochero, the inuchacho, the labourer ask for as inany gold pesos as be lias been receiving under the rid ystem? i he does and the employer or buyer has to pay on this basis, it will mean a los of nearly twenty per cent to him. It will mean the difference between forty-one and a half cents and fifty cents gold. The trouble will be that the labourer, the small dealer and the muchacho will not readily grasp the real value of the new psso. Of course, the Commission will fix its value in the old money, the day it emits the inital batch of Conants.

The Japan Times states that there is a scheme on funt for opening between Japan and Siam a regular steamship, service by prolonging, the Formosan route of the Osaka Shosen Kaisha. Negotiations are being conducted on bis subject between Baron Ko lama, Governor- General of Formosa, and Mr. Inagaki, Japanese Minister to Siam.

MINING CO., LD.

The directors have the pleasure to present herewith the balance sheet and profit and loss account for the year ending 31st March, 1903, the Singapore accounts incorporated therein being closed on the 28th February.

During the year a change of management at Raub occurred. The late mining manager, having been offered an appointment in Austra- lis, tendered his resignation. The directors were then able to avail themselves of the advice

and assistance of the chairman-Mr. De Burgh Persse-who had visited Singapore and was then in London, in selecting a general manager for Raub. As a result, the directors were fortunate in securing the services of Mr G, C.

Eventually it was agreed that Mr. Spence should dr. ft a motion on the subject, for con- sideration at next meeting.

He had been charged with a breach of the Customs Law. In Japan, he said, they were expected to know the regulations of the ports before they entered them. In Hongkong and other ports a Cip tain on eptering a port was supplied with a cupy of the port's regulations, which was ex- pected to be returned before the vessel left. in these cases a Captain had an opportunity of learning the rules in force, but this method was not in vogue in Japan, although the Customs authorities were not slow in enforcing the pen- alty for infringement against all and sundry.
