At the Supreme Court this morning the Chief | By Steamship, Huiks, Justice, Sir W. M. Goodman, sitting in bank- Tuptcy jurisdiction, heard an application by Mr. F. C. Barlow, of Messrs. Deacon and Hastings, on behalf of two creditous, for the adjudication of the estate of Wong Fat Hing. The matter cane before the Acting Chiel Justice, Sir H. S. Berkeley, on the 23rd April, when it appeared that debtor bad gone away from the Colony, and the receiving onder was made and Mr. Bruce Shepherd was appointed official receiver in the estate. The liabilities were about $50,000 and assets $15,000. Mr. Bruce Shepherd pointed out that Sir Henry Berkeley had refuscil to grant two adjudications with most disastrous results as far as the Official Receiver was concerned, one debtor was in Canton and he had sent the other up to bring his partner to Hongkong, and im wediately he was in the act of bringing him down the Canton authorities arrested him and it took about three weeks before the mas could be released. His Lordship said he wanted to arrive at some satisfactory solution regarding the absence of debtors frani public examination and he would certainly not allow a man to be adjudicated bankrupt on his own petition. In the present case, according to the allidavit, there was very little probability of debtor attending his public examination, and if on that ground he declined to make him bank- rupt the result would be that, although the property was protected it was not vested in the trustee in such a way that it could be utilised
to the benefit of the creditors. After con-

In accordance with the provisions of the Companies Act, 1907, we certify that all our
repor, and statement of accounts for the year requirements as Auditors have been complied
with, andreport to the Shareholders as follows:-
1902.
The depressed condition of the shipping trade in the Far East during the year under review will have prepared shareholders for financial results much less satisfactory than the bandsome earnings of the two previous years. Notwithstanding serious adverse circumstances, however, it is gratifying that after crediting over £34,000 for the usual premium of insur ince to anderwriting account, the rovenue can still provide, (with the aid of the sum brought forward from yor) for income tax, interest. charges, and also £59,185 for depreciation on steamers, and yet leave credit balance.
Owing to these causes a dividend could' hardly have been looked for, but the absence of any total loss or of serious damage to the fleet for a long period has allowed of an accúmula- tion of profit on the underwriting account which nearly equals half the paid-up capital of the company, and the directors consider this account has reached such dimensions that they are justified in the interests of the shareholders in transferring £28,655 165. d. to revenue, leaving still the large sum of £240,0 0 at credit of underwriting account,
This transfer increases revenue account to £39,174 158. 78. and it is recommended that a dividend of 5 per cent, free of income tax, be declared, thus absorbing £24,794 10s, and leaving L5.38 55. 74. to be carried forward to the new account.
The company's fleet has, during the past year, been further strengthened by the addi- tion of the new steamers Vik Sang, Choy Sang and Awong Sang, in replacement of vessels sold at satisfactory prices. Two additional steamers for the coast trade were contracted far during the year and both have now been
delivered.
The board have not availed of the proposed increase of capital alluded to at the last annual meeting.
|
We have exaunoed and compared the above Balance Sheet and Revenue Account with the Books and Vouchers kept by the Company in London, and with the Statements received from the General Managers in China; and are of opinion that the Balance Sheet is properly drawn up, so as to exhibit a true and correct view of the state of the Company's affairs as shown by the books of the Company.

At Manila on 21st inst., Judge Sweeney handed down a decision in the maritime case of the Manila Transportation and Construction Company against the s.s, Food Stag. It will be remembered (says the Cablenews) that the Foot Seng came into port from Hongkong, in April 1903, seeking a purchaser. The vessel remained in the harbour until some time in July when she was endangered by a typhoon and rescued by the launch Afadye bé- onging to the plaintiff company.
The plaintiff asked salvage for salving the Food Seng and the court found in accordance with the petition. Salvage was allowed to the amount of 2,500 pases which were distributed among the crew of the launch Madge and the crew of the Bett, unuther vessel which rendered some assistance to the threatened Forc Seng.
