RACE BETWEEN THE " KOREA, AND “ EMPRESS OF JAPAN."
New VESSEL WINS.
The following is from the Japan advertiser- liners been run under conditions so well cal
Seldom or never has a race between ocean
culated to ensure a fur and square test of the merits of rival boats than what is destined to Lo down into history as the famous race in the Inlad Sea between the Korea and the Empress of Japan, which took place on their recent trip from Nagasaki to Kobe. Both steamers were fresh from docking and there fore with clean bostorns. Each had six boilers in action, and for each the course was the same, on a snooth sea, so that the bulkier crafi suffered no handicap. The Empress left Nagasaki two hours in advance of her rival, it becoming evident on both boats soon after starting that conclusions were to be. between them.
tried
DA the Korea the one topic of conversation was the possibility of overtaking the Canadian boat, which was undoubtedly doing her level best to further distance her purster. As the new liner sped on at an average rate of 19.3 knots the prospect
of overhauling her rival filled alt on board with excitement, and when at last the leader was sighted, and the distance between the boats announced to be diminishing at the rate of a mile and half an hour the infection was universal, The ship was namsacked for everything bearing the semblance of an American flig, or indeed of that of any nationality, and when these failed the beds were stripped of sheets to be waved in celebration of the approaching victory. The stern chase, as always, was a long chase, but when at last, to miles from Kobe, the new, liner drew up alongside, the pant- ing engines of both crafts testifying to the strenuousness of the race, pondeun om broke loose on the Korea. The decks, crowd ed with passengers, were a mass of waving dags and sheets, while he Chinese on board, reinforced by a relay of frantic stokeis just up from their tussle with the fires in the bold, added to the din by he d'echarge of multitu dinous fire crackers,
Humour was not absent from the occasion. At the moment of the leap ahead of the victori ous craft someonean hoard the Empress unrolled a lagre sheet on which was the inscription :--
"OUR KOREA IS OVER,"
In the excitement of the moment one of the hands on the winning haat ran up a broom to the masthead, whereupon Captain Seabury is reported to have been furious with indignation ad to have said: "If can find the man who di] that I discharge him on the spot, and if I find any na who tells on him I'll discharge
hm also.
The Korea arrived at Kobe twenty minutes ahead of her rival, who was then some eight
miles in the rear.
