The ship was turned hack at 7.20 but no trace was found. Grea! credit is due to the first and second officers, and the chief engineer, for the admirable way in which they looked after the welfare of the passengers from the moment of leaving the Albert Docks until the arrival of the ship at Colombo, and a signed testimonial to that effect was presented to the former before reaching Singapore.

Those who argue so obviously know nothing about the spread of bubonic plague. Many ascribe it entirely to rats, forgetting that fleas are para- sites common to rate and men, and may be found in abundance where there are unwashed cats and dogs. At any rate it is clear that hese drastic measures have so far operated to the advantage of the community in general, and of the shipping and trading sections in particular Such through-going action must necessarily cost a tride in the way, of compensating those whole property has to be destroyed, but as this cost is incurred for the benefit of the public it should be, and, no doubt, is cheerfully borne.
