new and in A i condition. temporary says that it appears that from the moment, of leaving England the deceased was troubled in his mind with regard to the safety of his ship, fancying that a number of barrels of acid, which were firmly lashed and wedged in the scuppers of the lower deck, would be come unfastened in the rough weather, causing great damage. The Kawachi Maru experi enced a big gale and high seas in the Mediter- rascan, and this was the cause of the late Captain's temporary insanity. Both the first and second officers had great difficulty in preventing him from altering the course, and on several occasions the ship made complete circles in the height of the gate, and it was lucky that the passengers were kept in complete ignorance, otherwise undoub
The tedly there would have been a panic. Kawachi Maru was kept eleven hours in the Canal by a steamer which had gone aground, and this also preyed on the captain's-mind.- Finally, on Easter Sunday, He disappeared, being last seen by the first officer, not by Mr. James as stated in the Cnylon papers, at four o'clock in the morning. The ship was turned hack at 7.20 but no trace was found. Grea! credit is due to the first and second officers, and the chief engineer, for the admirable way in which they looked after the welfare of the passengers from the moment of leaving the Albert Docks until the arrival of the ship at Colombo, and a signed testimonial to that effect was presented to the former before reaching Singapore.

THE WORD OF HONOUR. The men who do as they say; the things that prove to be what they were said to be,- how cheering it is to come upon them. Wa all hate to be deceived; especially, when the deception is intentional. But all men are not liars, even if David did say so in his haste. If they were society would be impossible Everybody knows that business is based on credit, on faith. Millions are bought and sold daily on nothing more solid than the pledged Promises of men,-not written, merely verbal. The Stock Exchanges are often called nests of gamblers, yet nowhere is a promiss held in greater honour. Therefore when we say that the tried and effective remedy called
WAMPOLE'S PREPARATION never deceives any who resort to it in hope of benefit and cure, we may expect to be believed. For this assurance is given on what it has done in the past in countless cases on its record. It is only recommended to ac- complish what it was made to accomplish. Its action in Chlorosis, Anemia, Scrofula, General Debility, Throat and Lung Troubles, Blood Impurities, etc. is convincing. It is palatable as honey and contains the nutritive and
curative properties of Pure Cod Liver Oil, extracted by us from fresh cod livers, combined with the Compound Syrup of Hypophosphites and the Extracts of Malt and Wild Cherry. Dr. Austin D, Irvine, of Canada, says: "I have used it in cases where cod liver oil was indicated but could not be taken by the patient, and the results following were very gratifying," It is effective from the first dose and agrees with the most sensitive and nervous stomachs. Ons bottle proves ite intrinsic value. It cannot deceive 5726 or disappoint you, and comes to the rescue of those who have received no benefit from any other treatment. It stands for the medical triumphs of the age. "Watch carefully against imitations." Sold by chemists here and every- where and A. S. Watson & Co., Limited.

The reason why Singapore escapes the terrible experiences of other places is due to the effectual measures -adopted by the Municipal Health Officer and

girl, a victim of bubonic plague, was discovered
third on the
floor of a farge house in Hongkong, Sireet. The place was used as a store. During the following two days, wayfarers andra idents were surprised to observe huge fires burning in the street, Inquiries elicited the explanation that every- thing in that store which was likely to have plague germs in, on, or about it, was being destroyed by fire.
In addition to this the N TEETH ORDINARY GENERAL ceiling of the upper floor was burnt and the
MEETING of the Company (since its Regis house partly unionfed to admit light and air.tration) will be held at the OFFICES of the The ground floor (earth) was dug up a foot and submitted to the fiery ordeal. The plaster on the walls was knocked off and similarly dealt with. Finally the house was washed down from garret to cellar with disinfectants. It may here be pertinently asked if the public ever bestow a thought on the risk run by the men who carry out these operations, and, assuming that the risk is recognised, how far the public are disposed to remunerate the men who practically daily risk their own lives. to preserve the public from the risks of con. tagion. For the carrying out of the dangerous work aliaded to, the Sanitary Inspector of the district received the sum of $2 and the Chief Inspector one dollar, as disinfecting pay. Comment is needless, but it may be added that it is surprising that men can be got to do the work on such terms. It may be argued that such drastic measures are not necessary. Those who argue so obviously know nothing about the spread of bubonic plague. Many ascribe it entirely to rats, forgetting that fleas are para- sites common to rate and men, and may be found in abundance where there are unwashed cats and dogs. At any rate it is clear that hese drastic measures have so far operated to the advantage of the community in general, and of the shipping and trading sections in particular Such through-going action must necessarily cost a tride in the way, of compensating those whole property has to be destroyed, but as this cost is incurred for the benefit of the public it should be, and, no doubt, is cheerfully borne.
