BIG FINE FOR EXCESS OF PASSENGERS.
At Singapore on the afternoon of the 71b inst. Capt. C J. Mattock, master of the s.5, Amura, 80 responded to a summons issued at the instance 80 of Chief Boarding Officer Dennison, to explain 8how in a recent voyage from Longkang he 986 carried as passengers two hundred adults and 108 22 86 a child in excess of the number allowed by the 15 = 88 ship's license. The fact was admitted. Mr. 489 Brockman remarked that the case was a bad one, and imposed a fioc of$5 for each passenger in excess, the aggregate amounting to $1,052.5 To this was added a fine of $50 imposed on Captain Matlock personally, and the costs, 50 cents, the whole figuring up to $1,113.

JOHN Wylie, a youth barely sixteen, appeared before Mr. J. H. Kemp this morning charged with oblaining the sum of $o under false pretences from two native women. It appears that Wylic on the 13th instant went to Nos. 10 and 8, Lower Lascar Road, and represented hiinsell as a Government officer, in charge of water taps. After making a sort of inspection un the water services in the houses he con-Comdr. W, H. Ni-? demned two taps and ordered them to be,

At any rate the police got to hear of it, with the result that he was arrested. The Magistrate sentenced him to six months' hard labour. It may be mentioned that the prisoner had recently been discharged from the gaol where he had done five months, for a similar offence.

Next Monday, the 23rd of the 3rd moon on the Chinese calendar, is an important annual holiday-Tin How-far the Hongkong Chinese On this day the religious repair up the Canton River, some two and a half hours journey from this city, and worship in the multi-deity temple at Shek Wan, so named Tin How after the Go 'dess.
