A REMARKABLE DERELICT.
Messra Gibb, Livingston & Co. sent the N. G. D. News following copy of a telegram received from Lloyd's agents at Nagasaki :- 25g Dated 29th March, 1903. S.S. Heathdene reports having passed on 22nd March the derelict 5. V. Fannie Kerr

FROM YOKOHAMA AND KOBE, THE Steamship
"NIPPON,"
The sea is ever adding to its strange and wonderful stories, continues the journal, and the case of the Fannie Kerr furnishes one mora instance of the vastness of the ocean and its solitude even in these days of myriad vcascia. The Fannie Kerr was & British, four-masted, steel barque, of 2,426 tons, built in 1892 at Liverpool. She was commanded by Captain Gibbons, and in April last year left Newcastle, N. 8. W.. bound for an Francisco with a valuable cargo of coal. The last heard of her was on the 6th June, when her captain and crew landed at Kaual, an Island in the Nawail Group, made. their way to Honolulu, and eventually sccured passage by steamer to San Francisco. The captain reported that he had been compelled to abandon his vessel, which had been totally destroyed by fire. Claime were made on the Insurance Companies, which paid up the full amount of their obligations. Ten months later, the S.S. Heathdene reports the derelict to be still smouldering and to have drifted as far as Formosa; very nearly to the place where the THE HAL' Steamship Ofelia Petersen was stranded last November, Moreover, it is still drifting and is dangerous.
A surmise which may possibly explain how it comes that the derelict should survive so long is that the captain, finding his holds hot when in the neighbourhood of Hawaii, and not having a possibility of seeing more land for a considerable period, abandoned the vessel; that the coal subsequently fused, as Australian coal will, and that it has continued to smoulder in the water since. The barque is a fine steel vessel, and may yet prova valuable salvage.

SANDER, WIELER & CO., Agents. Hongkong, 30th March, 1903;
The Treasurer's report on the working of the Slugapore Currency Note issue in 1902 has been published in the local Gazette. The number of notes in circulation at the end of last year was 1,80,708 equal to $14,393.449. This was a very considerable rise over the previous year. The five-dollar notes were the most popular...The coin reserve showed an increase of over a million and a half dollars. The value of notes encashed at the Treasury was $2,751,770, the largest single sum being $14,000 and the greatest amount ja one day $36,370. On no occasion was the reserve vault opened to give out coin in exchange for notes to the public. Notes of the face value of $3,240 were withdrawn form cir. culation as being no longer serviceable. A few other notes were also withdrawn, some of which were presented as specunens to the Batavian Society of Arts and Sciences, and one 550 note was returned as imperfect. There was again a drop in the average, monthly circulation of the local Banks, mainly due to the Hongkong Bank gradually bringing in its local issue. Remittances to the Crown Agents for invest- ments totalled $3,073,785, the greater of which was invested in gold securities. There was a rise of $36,000 in the interest on investments A commencement was made with a deprecia tion fund by investing $42,000 in gold securi- ties. The actual working of the department showed a balance to credit of $82, 190, whilst the expenditure for the four years of the issue, ay against the receipts; shows a credit balancé of $50,640.—5. F.
