With many, walking is a last resort of locomo: tion, when mot ir or cycle, brougham or 'bus fails. It is an ant the child learns with difficulty, seeking also to forget it when he begins to think for himself; for is not the first demand of the schoolbay, and the schoolgirl tos, for a bicycle? The longing of humanity is for flight; -some one has already made this ob servation. This longing is expressed in the invention of balloons, aero-planes, gigantic kites, and, lels ambitiously in motor-cars, in skating and switchbricking, to say nothing of skyscraper lifts, tobogganing, surreptitious rides at the tail of a van or trolley, as may be most convenient.

We, who live in China, seek to follow the promptings of this instinct, and seck in vain, While men in happier countries are trying on the wings of a butterfly, I remain a crawling caterpillar, "I nin a wonn, and no man"

The foreign trade of Siam is increasing. Siam's finances are in excitent condition. Her revenues show a constant and healthy increase during the last eleven years; her European securities have increased over 14 per cent, durin the last year; her treasury balance has more than doubled at home; and she has no national debt. Undesirable taxes are being abolished; no new taxation is being impored; a greater security of property encourages in dustry and thrift; and the people's wants are increasing with their prosperity."

VANCOUVER AND ORIENTAL

TRADE..

REMARKABLE DEVELOPMENT.

indications point to remarkable develop. ments in the trade between Vancouver and the Orient. For some time the consignments of flour for China and Japan have been steadily in reasing, and supplementary shipments of wheat have been made. Brea istuffs have been growing in popular favour in the Far East, and the Canadian exhibit now preparing at Osaka for the rapidly approaching Japanese national exhibition will undoubtedly add considerable force to the new tendency. Capitalists in the land of the Mikado have begun building flour mills, and hereafter much wheat will be shipped to be ground up in the country that imar yet be known as the "Flowery Kingdom" in a double sense. The evolution i a natural one, and emphasizes the fact that the bread-eating habit has become fixed in Oiental communities.

The new tendency will, by no means result in a loss of trade for the B. Camills. On the ther hand, mill men predict that new mills will have to be built to meet the inmense demand the next few years will see. When in Oriental funily buys a little flour and uses superior in the many uses to which it can be it as hrea', they coininence to find it so put that the ancient parlality for rice is rapidly undermined.

Physical phenomena have been assisting the natural evolutionary development. There was

As for wheelbarrows, I have seen worthy heads of families behind furniture, wife and babes, balanced over the one wheel, but I know that they are deadly slow, as, having once passed them on the road, I never repass thein, as they never get in front again. The slow moving footpassenger, like the tortoise of the fable, passes the ha e, as that injured being sits in a native inn waiting for the water to boil; but the wheelbarrow is slower than the tonoise. Sedan-chairs, perhaps from associat. ing with the big-wigged fashionables of a bygone time, seem to be the very thing for a mandarin, whose plump face, conic-section hat and embroidered front are more fittingly fruneden purchasing all the rice that could

in the window of a chair than are the yellow virage and meagre proportions of a foreigner. There s ill remains the boat, to travel in which is the dlce far niente di soine. Not when you have lu get out and help push: nor when the mosquito shrills in the twilight, and other horrors cicep for from the boards to their prowlings till the morni g. Neither is the inertness of boat travelling the deal life when the river is freezing, the boat anchored for an indefinite time, and foreign provisions shart.

THE COMING OF THE MOTOR.

A PEMARKABLE FOR CAST.

Mr Henry Norman contributes a remarkable article 10 the forthcoming number of the World's Work in the motor age," which he predicts will follow the railway age, and without indulging in any prophecy that is in any way suggestive of exaggeration, gives a towing description of what is likely to be the state of bings when the use of the motor-car becomes, as it must become in the near future, almost univer al
