At the close of June 1952 there were working all over India 192 mills running 5,096,905 spindles and 42,584 looms, employing a capital of 180 million of rupees and giving occupation to 18,031 persons. Bombay claims about yo per rent of the mills and spindles, and nearly to per cent of the looms. The position of the industry, which at the close of last year was grave, has since somewhat im proved, and some of the spinning mills that intended to stop working from the 1st of January, and others that thought of working short time, have for the moment abandoned the idea of so doing. The most noticeable feature in the industry, after the recent revival of trade, is the spinning of the higher counts of yarn. Eighteen per cent of the whole Bombay output is of counts above 20s and by using imported Egyptian and other cottons, the mills are producing appreciable quantities of yarn of 40s and upwards. Some have already adopted this plan and with success. But this should be done on a more extended scale. Then again why look to China alone for trade in yaru? The whole of South Africa is now open to trade; in Alexandria and parts of Asia, Bombay yarn is consumed, and thus the field might be further enlarged. During the month HONGKONG BANKS were very steady and there was no change in prices. In the opening weeks small parcels were taken offilie market at $695, but the ruling quotation and $592 50. At the time of writing they are throughout the month ranged between $690 wanted at $692. Business started in Docks at $199 and prices went steadily up until they touched $214, for cash; $218, for Way; $320, for June; $225, for July; 5213, for August; with strong buyers for cash. Their business during the month was very good, and it is expected that it will yield them handsame profits, and it is confidently expected that April will turn out a good month
too.
INSURANCES.
Unions continued in favour and were eagerly sought after by investors until the market price was put up to $335 where it stopped. Shares can be had at this figure and people who are taking them off the market consider themselves fortunate in being able to acquire them.
