There must be reason and fact to form a foundation for trust. In regard to a medicine or remedy, for example, people ask, "Has it cured others? Have cases like mine heen relieved by it? Is it in harmony with the Truths of modern science, and has it a record above suspicion? In 1887, five years before Tacoma essayed to

Dodwell & Co., an old shipping firm, with head offices in London, became the agents in the Orient for the Canadian Pacific Steamship company at the time of the inception of its line. established an office at Tacoma, and began to operate steamships across the Pacific in con- nection with the great Pacific railroad which has its most important Pacific coast tenninals at this city.

More than ten years have elapsed since Tacoma entered the Oriental trade and this port now handles the largest share of the

EXPORT TRADE TO THE ORIENT

which is enjoyed by any port. It has already been remarked that ten years ago much difficulty was experienced in securing west bound cargoes A complete transformation has taken place, and now the difficulty is to secure sufficient east-bound traffic, notwith standing the fact that importations of tea, silk, matting and other Oriental products show, in the aggregate, a material increase during the ten years. But the development of the export trade to the Orient during the decade in which Tacoma has participated in the trade has been phenomenal. In the early years of the decade Oriental sailings were few and far between. Now four lines of steamships are regularly engaged in the traffic betwren Tacoma and Oriental ports, and during the year 1901 forty. seven cargoes were dispatched for Oriental porte from Tacoma by regular liners or an average of about one a week. The

INCREASE IN THE ORIENTAL TPAFFIC handled from Tacoma was never before so marked as during the early months of the year, 1902. The volume of traffic has now attained such proportions that a number of the steamships which have been engaged in the service for many years have been released, and their places have been taken by steamships much larger and more powerful, and of the latest type of mammoth freight carriers. During the year 1903, the steamships Tacoma, Viitorin and Olympia, which are owned by the Northern Pacific Steamship company, vessels of Ameri. can register, and whose home-port is Tacoma, will continue in the Oriental trade, plying. between this port and Yokohama,-Kobe and Hongkong. They are the only small vessels remaining in the service. Their companions in the trade are steamships of greater size and carrying capacity. Five of these are new steamships recently built at American shipyards
