Arrangements were, accord. ingly, made for the use of the City Hall and an invitation, issued to "gentry, merchants, scholars and people," drew together a nume-

The Chinese came in hundreds and so far as we can learn were much and favourably impressed alike by Dr. Pentecost personally and by his utter ances, which occupied nearly an hour and a half in delivery and interpretation. We take occasion, afforded by the proceedings above noticed, to summarize what may be regarded

as the main features in a somewhat remark- able series of public meetings, which, if the Chinese assemblage be taken as in the succession, was brought to a close night before last in the City Hall. It should be premised that Dr. Pentecosi's

present journeyings in the East are in the interests of our Common Christianity. This object took him to the Philippine Islands at a juncture when, if we may. judge from the reports of his sermogs and speeches and certain statements and admissions in the Manila local press, the forceful, uncompro- PHOTOGRAPHIC mising, unapologetic presentation of Chris-
