The Somaliland Expedition. Col Manning with a flying column left Obbia on the 22nd instant to occupy the wells at Galkaya and to establish there a chief supply depot preliminary to a general advance.

Mr. Brodrick's Army Reform

Scheme.

London, 24th February.

A vigorous attack is being made in the House of Commons on Mr. Brodrick's Army Scheme, directed by Unionst members, Mr. E. W Bechet (Conservative), M.P. for Whitby, a member of the War Office Organisation Com- mittes, 1901, proposed an amendment to the Address, which regretted that the proposed organisation of the army is unsuited to the needs of the empire, and added that no pro- portionate gain in strength and efficiency had resulted from the recent increased expenditure He said that the Army Corps Scheme blocked the way to rational reform, and must be swept

away.

Major J. E. B. Seely (Conservative), M.P. for the Isle of Wight, said t.at the scheme if persisted in would entail national disaster. He urged that greater reliance should be placed on our citizen army,

Several Conservatives spoke in support of the amendment.

PULU.

A polo match, England versus Ireland, was played on Saturday, and proved a very at- tractive event. The excellent band of the 14th Bombay, Light Infantry discoursed harmony during the afternoon, and tea was served to the ladies of whom there was a fair number among the many spectators, England won the contest by 5—3,

CANTON, February 28th. -EXAMINATIONS,

The students are gathering from all parts of the province for the literary examinations. The passage boats are crowded. It is in. toresting to listen to the conversation of the students. Evidently they are at a loss to know just how the examinations are to be conducted. Perhaps one man came near the truth when he said, We must just write about these foreign devil questions whether we understand or not, Our examiner is sure to know less than we do and he will judge us by the old subjects,"
