of Messis. Wilkinson and Grist) appeared for the owner of the junk Yee Fung, plaintiff, and Mr. M. W. Slade, (instructed by Mr. H. J. Gerge, of Messrs. Johnson, Stokes and Master), for the owners of the German steamer liansa, defendants

"The plaintiff contended that the collision occurred about 8 p.m. on the 14th January last, just clear of the Hongkong end of the Capsuiman Pass, and to the S. E. of it. A light N.W. wind was blowing, and clouds obscured them on, hat il was clear on the water. The tide waree quarters food, running about three miles an hour towards the Capsuimun Pass. The Yee Fung was stresing from the Hongkong end of the Capsuimun Pass in the direction of Green Island, and was proceeding with a fair wind, but making little headway against the tide, A light was exhibited on a piece of iron at the foremast head. When the other ship was first seen, some three miles off, all three lights were visible. No measures were taken by the

junk to avoid collision, owing to the very short

interval which elapsed between the time when risk of collision occurred and the time of colli sien. The bow of the Ranta struck the Yee Fung on the port side a little aft of amidships. The plaintiff attributed faults to the langa as follows-Not keeping out of the way of the Ya Fung and improperly starboarding her belm when quita close to the. Yee Fung,

The defendants state that the collision occurred at about a quarter past eight near the Capsulmon Pass on the jongkong side, from a quarter to half a mile from

the small island 8. of Mah Wan Island.

After the notice convening the meeting had been read,

The Chairman said:-Gentlemen, the report

propose, if you will permit me, is take as read It is a matter of regret to the General Managers and the Consulting Committee that the promise of a year ago in respect to the too1 a/c. has not been realized, but unfortunately heavy losses

were subsequently sustained notably in this Colony, Amoy and Colombo, the total claims prid amounting since the commencement of 1902 to no less than $135,000. We have not

been alone in this unfortunate experience, but this does not lessen our disappointment. The net result is a balance available for division

of $199,315.46, and trust that the appropriation of this sum in the manner suggested in the report will commend itself to you. The addi- tion of approximately 10% of the year's profits to reserve will increase that fund to 51,154,891.96;' a substantial amount it is true but one which you will, I am sure, agree with-me it is desira ble to take every opportunity of adding to Turning to the 1902 a/c, you will observe that the balance at credit on 31st. Necember last was $199,299.15 or about £34.000 less than the 1901 a/c. at a corresponding period, but I should explain that the former has been already | charged with its proportion of the serious losses which I have already referred to as having fallen partly upon 1991, and although further losses have been sustained during the current year I may be allowed to express the hope that we may be fortunate enough not to have a re- petition of our last year's experience and that the final result of the account may allow of a larger dividend him it is now proposed to pay.

I should add that the customary valuation of properties mortgaged to the Company bave been made and that in every case there is an ple margin on the sums advanced. You are aware that fire insurance rates in Hongkong have recently been increased by 25% This has been done under instructions issued by the Fire Offices Committee, London, (to-) which our Company is affiliated) upon the grounds that the water supply of the Colony is inadequate and the fire extinguishing appliances insufficient. I do not myself con- sider that such an increase applied indiscrim inately is called for by existing, loral conditions, and representations which have been made will, it is to be hoped, induce reconsideration of the question. Already a Considerable amount of business has been lost owing to the increase, many large property owners preferring to carry risks themselves rather than pay the higher rates demanded, and it seems obvious that arbitrary action which leads to such a result cannot be heneficial to Fire Insurance Companies in the long run. Before moving the adoption of the report and accounts I shall be pleased to answer such questions regarding them as any share- holder may desire to put. (Applause.) There being no questions, I beg to move the adoption of the report and accounts.

Mr. T. Arnold-1 beg to second. Carried unanimously.

Mr. Geo. L. Tomlin-1 beg to propose that Mr. H. P. White having resigned from the Consulting Committee, Mr. J. H. Lewis be nominated for the vacant seat, and the present members, The Hon. Six C. P. Chater, C.M.G., Messrs. F. Maitland, A. J. Raymond and J. H. Lewis be re-elected.

Mr. A. G. Morris~! beg to second. Carried unanimously.

Mr. K. Mck. Ross-I beg to propose that Messrs. W. Hution Potts and R. Chatterton Wilcox be re-elected auditors,

Mr. Ho. Fook beg to second, carried tatimously.

The. Chairman-That concludes the busi- ness, gentlemen. Dividend and bonus war- rants will be issued to-morrow.
