THE-NEW, YEAR'S ARRESTS, MET The Chinese are still speculating regarding the circumstances connected with the arrest of the men supposed to be concerned in an attack on the city about the beginning of the year. Rumours continue to circulate. Now we are told that the prisoners are being gradually released on the demand of the German Consul Une by one men are being set at liberly. The Chinese seem to have a straight, story and you hear it on every side. They say that the King of the Britains ordered the release of the men arrested in Bengkong and that the Germans are following the example set by Britain. The reason for the German Consul's: action. is that. he gave the information which led to the arrest and therefore he must see that the men must be freed because there is no evidence to show that they were guilly of the crime charged against them. This is the story as the Chinese | have it, and they are rejoicing over the out- 'come of this trouble. How much truth there is in the story I cannot tell but if it should p ove true it will encourage reformers” to" make some other attempts.
