THE HARBOUR.

The silting up of the harbour of Macao goes on increasing year after year, so that oa certain days the Heungshus will only be able to leave her wharf at ten o'clock instead of at eight In the morning. THE SPREAD OF THE KWANG- SI REBELLION.

The rebellion in South China, as chronicled

Latest advices from Canton state that all the officials are at their wits end, and the despatch of troops to the borders of Kwai Chow is going on apice. On the 19th instant, the first detach- inent of troops sent from Kwangsi met with a serious reverse from the hands of the rebels and it is reported that over two hundred im perial troops were slain. All reports agree that, the rebels only sustained a very small loss. Yesterday orders were received at the Arsenal in Cafton to have in readiness as many rifles as possible. The manufacture of ammunition has been greatly increased. Two gunboats were despatched crowded with troops and had four mandarin junks for the West River in tow. It is feared that the rebels have a very powerful society in the very heart of Canton, and akhough the officals have tried every means to effect some arrests, they have failed. Reports were also received in Canton yesterday that another rebellion has started in the Fukien province, and it is the general opinion. that ere-long Canton itself-will-be thrown suto- the throes of a rebellion.

EXCITEMENT AT GANTON.

There is considerable, excitement in the Upper Pan D district, writes our Canton corre spondent under yesterday's date. It will be remembered that some weeks ago one of the Blue Funnel steamers, Ventnor, ran on a rock shortly after leaving New Zealand and sank. Several lives were lost. Among these were five or six Chinese returning to China, The chief cargo of the ship was dead men's b. nes. There were the bones of 420 Chinese on board. These remains had been carefully preserved and after suitable ceremonies were taken aboard the Veniner. Insurance was effected to the amount of £500, 1All these bones went down with the ship.
