'OUR LONDON LETTER,

(From Our Own Correspondent,).

LONDON. Sept. 19th, 1902. Snow at Keitering on Tuesday and a tem- perature according, all over the country dis- poses most people to suppose that we are really on the threshold of winter instead of bidding a lingering farewell to summer. Fashionable. folk-such as are returned to town—are don-"; sing their furs, and the shops are full of warm- garments. In passing may remark, for the benefit of your lady renders that all materials will be rough this season,-shag, fricze, coarse serge; nothing smooth is permissible. Scarlet is prophesied as a likely leading colour, especi. ally favoured being a scarlet shaggy cloth of which the hairs are white, giving a softening effect to what might otherwise be somewhat startling for a whole costume.

THE ARMY.

The South African army is pouring back into ' England at the rate of 8,000 per week, but their welcome is of the sparsest t Of course, a continual round of enthusiasm was not to be looked for after these years of war anxiety, but it is certainly regrettable that the men who were sent away amid such a tempest of cheers, should come back unnoticed, and just slip away to their homes; and in many cases to the hitter hardships of "out-of-work" without a friendly handshake from the British public.

A

Not many oldiers would care for the style of reception accorded to the C..V. after but a few months' service, which indeed did but ex prus national enthusiasm at its flood, and could not in the nature of things be often re- peated, but it is inevitable that the goops who have borne the stress of the whole campaign and who now return without so much as a band to meet them much

less display of Bags, should remember that earlier, welcome with some little feeling of bitterness. This is the more unfortunate in that the condition of the Army, stripped to n large extent of its veterans, and seasoned soldiers automatic passing to the Reserve, is causing no little anxiety to those responsible. for the defence of the Empire, Certainly the majority of those wearing the King's uniform who are to be seen in the streets of fondon have the appearance of mere boys.

not only for a full fighting line forthwith, but *** CONFIDENDE also considerable reserve to fill up the said Lord Chatham, “is a plant of slow inevitable casualties. Sir William asserts growth, People believe in things that they that the shortage of engineers is solely see, and in a broad sense, they are right. due to the refusal to grant them rank as What is sometimes called blind faith is not commissioned officers, following the old bad faith at all. There must be reason and fact to aristocratic tradition. This is not a new story, form a foundation for trust. In regard to a and probably has more in it than the ward" medicine or remedy, for example, people ask, room and My Lords" are disposed to allow,"Has it cured others? Have cases like mine but it is also true that the reason is exaggerated ns stated; and after all, if the merchant service were to make a move in the direction of establishing the equality of the engineers with the navigating and administrative officers, the Navy would inevitably follow suit sooner or later at any rate this is an argument often heard from the lips of the old-fashioned coin- missioned officer. The story return of the Terrible from your waters served as a further text for fulminations against things as they are --from some unexplained cause she crept home at something under to knots an hour, though built for 37. The Powerful, another ship of interest ip Hongkong, came home indeed at re- asonable speed, but when' docked, her repairs ran nearly into six figures, and at the present time every Yard in the kingdom is crowded with crippled cruisers, men-of-war, and torpedo destroyers.

FORTHCOMING ENGAGEMENT.

WAMPOLE'S PREPARATION has won its high reputation among medical men, and the people of all civilized countries. They trust it for the same reason that they trust in the familiar laws of nature or in the action of common things. This effective remedy is palatable as honey and contains the nutritive and curative properties of Pure Cod Liver Oil, extracted by us from fresh cod livers, combined with the Compound Syrup of Hypophosphites and the Extracts of Malt and wild Cherry

It quickly eradicates the poisonous, disease-breeding acids and other: toxic matters from the system; regulates and promotes the normal action of the organs, gives vigorous appetite and digestion, and is infallible in Pristration-following Fevers, etc.

Influenza, Wasting Diseases, Throat and Lung Troubles, etc. Dr. W. A. Young, of Cănada, Rays; "Your tasteless pre- paration of cod liver oil has given uniformly satisfactory results, my patients having been of all ages." It is a product of the skill and science of to-day and is successful after the old style modes of treatment have been appealed in in vain

The engagement of Princess Alice of Albany to the German Crown Prince is almost daily expected. The only daughter of the late Queen's youngest son is an extremely pretty-Scrofuta, girl of nineteen-quite the beauty of the unmar ried members of our Royal family. She is an excellent artist, her teacher having remarked three years or more ago, that had the Princes been born in a different station of life, she would have had no difficulty in carning herliving. She has alt her mother's charm of manner, and is extremely popular with all classes of people, The cottagers round Claremont are still wont to speak affectionately of "our little Princess." Fortunately she is well liked in German Court circles, and if the expected takes place, is never likely to experience what darken- ed so many years of the life of the last ¦ English Princess who became Crown Princess of Prussia.

The Australians brought

The importance of this orator is a good deal exaggerated by reason of the scarcity of journalistic excitement incidental tis the season, still the Gateshead knight is something of an expert and when allowance is made for his in- stinctive attitude "agin the Government" his opinion is worthy of attention. He describes the navy of which we are disposed to be so proud as a "phantom feet and claims further.that it possesses neither steam power, men power, or gue power. Even our newest ships were under- manned, and inferior in regard to the weight of metal which they could fire, when compared, with the latest Japanese cruisers. This may, 'or may not be true, it is cutside the cognizance" of the layman and therefore should be (but is not) outside his criticism; but the further figures certainly give food for reflection to the most unsophisticated, Sir William asserts that we are 900 engineers, 2,000 artificers, and 14,000 firemen below our, normal footing-how then would it be in the event of a war which called

The redoubt. able Trumper has not quite succeeded in topping averages fat with 48'49 he still makes a bow to Shrewsbury at 5000. THE WORD OF HONOUR.

| ________ Intimations. **

The men who do as they say: the things that prove to be what they were said to be, how cheering it is to come upon them. We all hate to be deceived; especially when the decep- tion is intentional. But all men are not liars, even if David did say so in his haste. If they were society would be impossibile. Everybody knows that business is based on credit, on faith. Millions are bought daily on nothing mare solid than the pledged promises of men, changes are often called nests of gamblers, yet -not written, merely verbal. The Stock Ex-

nowhere is a promise held in greater honour. Therefore when we say that the tried and Preparation "never deceives any who resort to effective modern remedy called "Wampole's in it hope of benefit and cure, we may expect to he believed. For this assurance is given on what it has done in the past in countless cases, on its record. It is only recom- mended to accomplish what it was made to accomplish. Its action in Chlorosis, Anemia, La Grippe, General Debility, Throat and Lung Troubles, Blood Impurities, etc. is convincing. it is palatable as honey and contains the nutri- tive and curative properties of Pure Cod Liver: Oil, extracted by us from fresh cod livers, combined with the Compound Syrup of Hypophosphiles and the Extracts of Malt and Wild Cherry Dr. Austin D. Irvine, of Canada, says: "I have used it in cases where cod liver oil was indicated but could not be taken by the patient, and the results following were very gratifying." It is effective from sensitive and nervous stomachs. It cannot deceive or dis appoint you, and comes to the rescue of those who have received no benefit from any other treatment. I stands for the medical triumphs of the age. Sold by all chemists here.
