Several private residences of the Catholic community at Belilios Terrace, Chico Terrace, Peel Street, Shelly Street, Caine Road and Hollywood Road were illuminated with Japa- nese lanterns. At 9 o'clock Bishop Piazzoli held a reception at the Catholic Union of Glenealy. The Club-house was decorated with lanterns, made in the shape of a large cross for the occasion. At a few minutes. to nine the Bishop arrived accompanied by members of the Roman Catholic clergy and the bells of the Cathedral sent forth peels of joyous chimes to the strain of the Band which strack up the Portuguese National Anthem. Since the arrival of the new Gover. nor Wang Chi Chua, funds were collected for exterminating the rebels, but after a month in Wuchen, over two hundred of his soldiers deserted as the climate did not agree with them, so he has not decided upon a mode of procedure.
