ANNUAL MEETING.

The defence says that it is because "crime is prohibited, and the Government adopts measures against it, and nothing more."

Deplorable contradiction i

If crime is prohibited, and the law is just because it punishes those who offend and insult others, why do they not allow the Circul. - ation in Macao of the Portuguese newspapers, so that the provisions of that law may be en forced against them, thus promoting a social advantage? Why do the authorities of Macao, who have the courage to commit, despotism, have not the same courage to punish the offen- ders, thus allowing the (alleged) insults and calumniis contained in the Portuguese 'news- papers to be widely spread with impunity instead of allowing them to fall into the hands- of the officials at Macao; for them to judge and. punish those insults and calumnies ? ::

The business was soon transacted at the nineteenth ordinary general meeting of the Douglas Steamship Company, Limited, held at noon to-day at the offices of the Company, Des Voeux Road Mr. J. H. Whether, a is in store for good or bad season

H Hongkong the citizens may rest assured that, both socially and financially, the most will be made of the few brief months of respectable weather which herald the approach of the miserably damp and oppressively hot days preceding the opening weeks of summer. It is a busy time for everyone. The fleet graces the harbour by its presence, mail ships bring crowds of new faces to our shores, and a smile of sweet content glows on the features of the "old hands, whose boast is of many winters weathered in the trying climate of the Colony. Our Theatre is open to those who care to occupy the boards, and Hongkong ites seçk admission no matter the quality of the play or players. They realise that after dusk the social gatherings of the Colony are, generally speaking, centred in local bars where friends are met together and "grumble n'er pipe and mug." As a con- sequence, those undesirous of taking part in such entertaining and enlightening debates book seats at the City Hall with the result that theatrical companies benefit, and, to their credit it must be said, they often provide us with excellent items. Next week the Theatre will open with the Neill-Frawley Company, who stage "Secret Service," and "Lord and Lady Algy." Then the Amateur Dramatic Club has pro- mised His Excellency the Governor," while in the near future we many look for- ward to our old friends, the Brough Company. The notice convening the meeting having been read,

The Chairman said:-Gentlemen,, the re- port and accounts having been in your hands for some days, I propose with your consent to take them as read. The almost universal depression in shipping has accentuated the keenness of the competition on our coast lines, but as the result of our year's working proves, we still continue to retain the coufidence of shippers generally. As regards the prospects for the current year; the Haimun and Formosa are under charter to the United States Government until the end of Decem- ber, and it is not improbable that these charters may be continued for a further period The earning of the other steamers of the Com- pany in the meantime are fairly satisfactory, and it is not unreasonable to hope that in the not very distant future, there will be a steady revival of trade to compensate us for the in- creasing cost of working expenses. There is nothing further that I can usefully add, gentle imen, but before proposing the adoption of the report and accounts I shall be pleased to answer any questions.

They know that the Portuguese newspapers. of Hongkong do not commit crime, as they do no injustice, do not slander, do not calumniate, do not publish facts concerning the private life of any one. They know all this per fectly well, and are convinced that › the Portuguese newspapers of Hongkong conduct themselves as all journals which are conscians of their duties, of their mission to fight for the well-being of Macao-the home of the Portu- guese in the Far East should behave. They know that the Patrists and the Porvir are the only Portuguese Newspapers now in the Far East, and the only ones that might prove to be submerged rocks in the path of the powerful and despotic officials of Macao. They know all this, and it is for this reason that they wish to gag those journals and, if possible, to strangle them, and whilst so acting, they hypocritically say in a foreign paper Criticism is free and, the Portuguese government desire that it should so be. And knowing that such worthless allegations will never have the effect of stifling. the conviction of the English journalists of this Colony as regards those unjust and despotic officials, they, with incredible barefacedness, have recourse to a foreign newspaper to injure and slander the national papers, saying, among a thousand and one other things,
