PRINCE FRANCIS OF TECK-His The countries of the world appear fully Highness Printe Francis of Teck has retired awake to the necessity of advertising their resources, and most of the nations are beginning to recognise the importance of adequate representation on such an im portant occasion as the Louisiana Purchase Exposition of 504. The problem be- 22.80 fore the St. Louis management is one of vast importance and magnitude, and it is gratifying to learn that the popular sub- scription in behalf of the undertaking is now assured, su that ample funds will certainly be in hand to carry out the large designs proposed for the Exposition. The mumerous agents scattered throughout the world have forwarded most encouraging advices to headquarters, and it is promised that every country in Europe as well as in Asia will send special and elaborate exhibits. But how is Hongkong to be represented at the St. Louis World's Fair, as it is more popularly known? That is the question which it behoves not only our merchants and shippers to consider, but which should certainly commend itself to the earnest attention of the government authorities, inasmuch as the Colony is now so closely associated with America in the opening up of her new. Philippine territory. It is generally accepted that Hongkong forms by far the most important entrepot on the China coast, and isot only credited with a great.proportion of the commerce passing with the United Kingdom, America, Aus tralia, India, the Straits Settlements and the coast ports of China, but has an expand ing tradal intercourse with Manila and other Philippine centres.

CANTON NOTES.
(From Dur Own Correspondent)
CANTON, September 20th. THE NEW VICEROY AND NEW GOVERNOR.
Sometime Saturday night the governor Tak handed over the seats of office to Li who lately arrived from Shanghai. Yesterday, Sunday. morning a proclamation appeared giving notice of the transfer and saying that all business pertaining to the governor's office would be transacted by Li. The Viceroy also handed over the seals and Tak is now viceroy. The retiring Viceroy, ao, is too ill to move out of his yamên ; it is announced that he will remain a day or two longer in the yamên. Tao Mu continues to have hemorrhages and is very weak.
Tak has several times acted as Viceroy and there is not much room for speculation as to his policy. He is conservative and will not be likely to originate many reforms. Still, as in the past, he will move forward as he is urged on by others. Not much is said about the new Governor, Li. All that we hear is that he is very old and that the business is likely to be transacted by others.
