ALLEGED EMBEZZLEMENT: A book seller in Des Virus Road, named Tam Yan, was charged by a contractor with embezzling on divers occasions, between 19th june and 3rd inst, sums of money amounting 10 $525. Mr. Grist appeared for the defence, and after taking the evidence of several witnesses for the defence Mr. Hazeland said he was satisfied that the defendant was not guilty and discharged him. A similar charge bas bect brought against another man. The case is being heard. THE STRAITS CONTINGENT:-When the members of the Straits Coronation Con- tingent arrive back in Singapore by the P. &, O. Java on the 20th inst, they will be wel comed by the S.V.C., who will parade specially for the purpose. The Contingent will land, according to present arrangements, at John- ston's Pict. The North Boraco Contingent are due here by the Hamburg on the same day, remarks a Singepore paper. A thrilling story of a struggle: whi the elements, after leaving Shangbai for the Royal leads, is told by. Caplain Davidson, of the British four-masted ship Alice Leigh, which arrived at Victoria on the 15th ult. Between 150 and 200 miles off Yokohama, the ship was struck by a typhoon, which almost completely' disabled her, and left her wallowing in a high sea, with her rigging, tackle, yards, and broken spars swinging to and fro in such a manner that for about twenty-four hours
