OUR VOLUNTEERS ATR

MONTREAL

A OLORIOUS TIME,

We take the following account of the Corona tion Contingent at Montreal from The Gaselte, of June 11th :--

Placo Viger Hotel at midnight last night presented a more brilliant spectacle than usual, The scarlet of the regiment of the line mingled with the dark green of the rifles and for once in a while the plain, citizen mingled with concourse of local Mongolians, who seemed to take as much interest in the arrival of the Oriental contingent as did the soldiers of the King, who were much disappointed and said things. All gates were closed and shortly before half past twelve the reception committee and others who wished to make arrangements for the amusement of the troops sorrowfully filed out of the rotunda of the hotel. The Chinese contingent lingered long, and after everybody else was supposed to be at home. the oblique-eyed gentleman got on to the platform and stayed there patiently.

As there was no possibility of a rush the gate was operied, and when the train of four coaches and a baggage car landed, there were twelve Chioamen, about twenty Caucasian and two ladies to welcome the contingent. The coaches were black as night. Not a guard, not a light, not a sound of life, hut a healthy ansal sound of undisturbed snoring. The easiest was to travel from the back of the train forward. At the place of honor from the rear. car flew the flag of the Hongkong volunteers, and it looked like one that had seen service Eventually two men in" khaki were found awake. They came from Hongkong. They only had time to say a couple of words before the train backed out again, but they managed to remark how pleasant the trip was and that

"THE CHOW WAS FINE," WHATEVER THAT BLANT. Among the troops represented are the Hong-

· kong and Singapore Artillery, the Wei-Hai- Wei regiment, sappers and miners, Sikhs and Purjaubees.

Conductor Hibbard, who brought the train from Ottawa, says he never saw a fuer lot of fellows in his life, but he thinks they were a bit disappointed at not being able to see Ottawa,

THE BOXER EISING,

The Trechou, Szechuan correspondent of ⠀| the M. G D News writes as follows on the 25th ult

On June 20th I wrote you something of the beginning of the Boxer movement in this region, and of the attack on the peaceful Chris- tian community of Tienkuchao, “Since then further heart-sickening details have come "to hand from day to day. The chapel was built in the country two or three miles from a village. There were

were forty members and

seventy-five probationers, together with a large number of enquirers, part of them living in the immediate vicinity and others in several surrounding villages. The preacher, a bachelor of about sixty, much loved and respected, lived in a room adjoining the chapal. Rev. W. E. Manly, the missionary, in charge, had spent the Sunday with them two days before the attack, ministering to a full house. The assailants, with-

VACES. BLACKENED, AS A DISGUISE, approached from three sides at once, and the sleepers, awakened by the blood curdling Boxer yell, found, themselves already com. pletely surrounded. Springing from their beds in wild terror they rushed forth, some of them to a violent death. The proacher was killed' before he had gotten out of the chapel door Head, hands and feet were cut off, and the trunk disembowelled and mangled most fiendishly.

The chapel and its furniture" were set 'on fire, but only partially burned and the homes of eighty-nine people, with all their con-. tents, completely consumed. The survivors fled in all directions, homeless and penniless. The officials have provided money for tem, porary necessities; but it is difficult to find shelter, since even friends and relatives, through fear of the Boxers, often refuse to receive them. Considerable numbers of con- verts from other villages have fled from their homes, and in some cases looting and burning have occurred. The Boxers have been watch- ing the roads, seeking especially to.

of each place. The village nearest the place to which the Boxers retreated would have met the same fate as Tienkuchino on the same night, had not they been seen and a messenger sent to give the alarm. The converts are not the only sufferers. Crowds of non-believer have been pouring into this city, abandoning all but what was most valuable and could be most easily removed..

For the last few days

THE BOXERS HAVE BEEN INCREASING IN NUMBER.

The Eastern contingent consisted of eighty three men under the command of Major Chap- man. Half of the troops are white, while the others are Chinese and East Indian, who, of course, are also British soldiers. There are five cars on the train and one of these is devoted to the Singalesa and Sikhs, who are permitted to kill and cook their food according to Moham medan rites. Not one of the Indian troepsdaily, while the soldiers have been burred on stands less than six feet in height, white the Chinese are also of a high standard. Khaki is the uniform of the men. It has been decided to entertain the visiting India and Chinn con tingents to a smoking concert Thursday night in the Victoria Rifles Armory. Non-commis- sioned officers of city corps in uniform, drill

order, are invited to attend.

The Boxers want the two foreigners here and threaten the life of the official himself, A defeat at this juncture would greatly intensify the danger, and might result in the capture of the city. Mails from St. Petersburg generally, reach Port Arthur in it to 15 days by the railways Ten merchants at Hankow have now made up their minds, we understand, to use the railway for sending tea to Irkutsk. Formerly the tea was taken from Tientsin to Irkutsk via Chang klakou and Uls, and the quantity so carried was from 380,000 to 400.com boxer a year. Arrangements have lately been made between the tea dealers and the Eastern Chinese Rail way Company, as follows:

A-Every convenience with regard to anchorage of cargo in Dalny shall be given to

the tea merchants.

B-The special carriages required for the forwarding of tea shall be prepared as soon as possible."

O-The freightage between Dalny and Irkutsk shall be less than two roubles par box In all cases.

It is held likely that tea trade between China and Russia will be much benefited by the new departure,

SURROUNDED AND FIERCELY ATTACKED.

Being soldiers who had seen fighting, they fought their way out, killing and wounding several, and losing only one killed and one wounded, being compelled to retreat in the direction from which they had come.

Late to-day has come news of the anticipated battle fought this morning. The arrival of so many soldiers had alarmed the Boxers, so that nearly all had fled when their fortified rendezvous was surrounded. There was no battle. A score or more of the Boxers were killed and a few captured, the remainder dis- persing or fleeing to two other hills of refuge. The one death among the soldiers was due to a quarrel over the spoils. It is likely that checked, but we fear that the victory will be the Boxer depredations will be somewhat followed up with so little energy that the fire, smothered for a time,
