THE "DE WITTE” TYPHOON.
THE HONGKONG TELEGRAPH, THURSDAY, JULY 10, 1902.
In Suabia itinerant singers go abour singing the prophecy of saint Ingeport, a nun who is To mention a cyclone-and naturally if the said to have had communion with spirits, and word typhoon is used-is to suggest the "Farwhose prophecies have, until now, come true. East" says Indian Enginuring.
The reason for the prevalence of violent cy. clones about the boundary which separates the Indian and Pacific Oceans is not far to seek. Al though the behaviour of an easily compressible fluid such as air is in many respects widely different from that of an almost incompressible quid like water, similarity in main features is very apparent; while theoretical investigation is much easier when we consider a fluid of invariable density. The differential equations of vortex motion for a liquid are, of course, greatly simplified by the fact that its density is a constant quantity; moreover, we can experiment with, and observe the be haviour of, water on a comparatively small scale. The chain of islands roughly connect- ing Asin with Australia appears to have the same effect on conflicting currents in the air which submerged obstructions have in water. At every half tide marked eddies-observable perhaps nowhere else are most noticeable above

or such like obstructions: although these may be far below the surface and project but slightly above the bottori, they are adequate to determine vortex, motion. The investigation of cyclones phenomenal in their magnitude is of special value, not only because such violent meteors are particularly dangerous, but also since we may reasonably presume that deter mining features will in their case be most clearly marked.
A very valuable and interesting monograph on the "De Witte" typhoon, which raged in the China seas from the 31st July to the 5th August 190r, has been written by the Rev. Louis Froc Director of the Zi-Ka- Wei observatory near Shanghai. The writer appears to have known, as if by instinct, the exact points which are hoth most useful for scientific purposes and valuable as items of information to the seaman; and discussed these in an eminently efficient manner.
The track of the cyclone, which appears to have arisen somewhere about the Caroline Islands, is well traced until it
When Germany is at its greatest," said Saint Ingepers, "the fall will come. I see rivers of blood in all German valleys, and Cossack horses drinking in the waters of the Elbe and of the Rhine." In Bavaria, a professor of the University of Wurzburg has just returned from Italy with a prophecy of a woman called Rosa Columba, who died in 1837. She was on ignomat peasant woman of Taggia, a little village in the Riviera, "but she' correctly pre- dicted the fall of Louis Philippe, the defent and exile of Charles Albert of Sardinia, the restoration of Pope Pius IX "by a Napoleon," the defeat of Austria, and the re-establishment of the kingdom of Italy. Rosa Columba pre- dicted one thing more. She announced
ANOTHER ITALIAN RÉVOLUTION, and at the same time a great European war, during which "the Russian soldiers will put uptheir horses in the church adjoining the con- {vent at Taggia.”

Of course many people will smile at these 'prophecies, and yet one cannot help remember- ing that France was overrun with supernatural stories during the year which preceded the Franco-German war.
Renan himself, who was not a superstitions BATTERIES, man, wrote, "it may be remembered. Through out the history of the world, whenever great- events have been about to happen, vague rum- aurs, sometimes precise and nearly always realised, have warned nations of the dangers with which they are threatened. · 1 can but point out this mysterious instinct, I cannot explain it." And Germany, without trying to explain, is vaguely uneasy.

STRUCK, THE COAST OF CHINA and the general direction of its subsequent course determined. The central depression was most marked and deep; the barometer falling to nearly 27 inches. This is, of course, a phonomenal depression although, lower read ings have been recorded, as at Vohèmar in Madagascar on 3rd February 1899, but there, no mention is made either of the height of the station above sea level ner of instrumental corrections. The barometer curve gives a perfect representation of what the surface of a liquid assume under similar circumstances, and shows a most violently pointed whirl-pool depression. To deduce the depression in the actant surface of the air is a more complex problem, but the data coilefied are of great practical utility. The velocity of translation appear to have varied from 7 to 15 miles per bour. The breadth of the central depressions Dals Mr. Carl Graprogiesser. From Antwerp.-To- or calm area, where well ascertained, was some B miles, being more or less elliptical in plan. This rapidly filled up on landing, the cyclone passing across Asin as a huge bore. The extent of the disturbance varied with the quarter of the compass, but roughly while at sea it was 350 miles, radius for "wind force 7 to 8, 290 miles for 9-10, and 170 miles radius for 11-12.

A marked feature of the cyclone was the
EXTRAORDINARY DEFTH. to which the sea was disturbed by the waves, Those breaking over one of the P and O. steamers--the Bombay" we suppose is meant -left two or three inches of mud on her decks. This probably indicates that the two air currents which on meeting formed the vortex,: bad been blowing with great violence across great distances of open sea. The value of telegraphic information is thus emphasized, as it is indeed exemplified throughout the whole history of this typhoon. Great credit is due to the Japanese in establishing-immedi-hate to be deceived; especially when the decep. ately on the cession of Formosa-a lios of advanced stations connected with the rest of their empire. A line of out-posts now exists through which an enemy can scarcely pass without detection.
THE END OF GERMANY.
SOME CURIOUS PROPHECIES. Within the last week or two says an ex- change, a number of prophets have sprung up- in Germany, and a feeling of superstition bas arisen there which no officialism has been com petent to quell. The movement has taken place mainly in the south, and from all quarters come rumours of coming wars and of the down.
fall of Germany,
It is difficult to say how the rumours have originated or who has started them, but they have become so general that the Kaiser has actually been taking steps to try to repress the superstition of his people-steps which have been attended, naturally enough with very small success, for superstition is not a thing that can be controlled by law.
In the Northern Provinces folk are whisper ing the famous prophecy of the monk Hennin, who, several centuries ago, announced that one day the Hohenzollera, dynasty would be res established, but that the third Emperor of this great family would come to

tion is Intentional. But all mes are not liars, even if David did say so in his haste. If they were society would be impossibile. Everybody knows that business is based on credit, un faith. Millions are bought daily on nothing more solid than the pledged promises of men, -not written, merely verbal. The Stock Ex-. changes are often called nests of gamblers, yet nowhere is a promise held in greater honour. Therefore when we say that the tried and Wampolo's effective modern remedy called Preparation never deceives any who resort to it in hope of benefit and cure, we may expect to be believed. For this assurance is given on what it has done in the past in countless Cases, on its record. It is only recom- mended to accomplish what it was made to accomplish. Its action in Chlorosis, Anemia, La Grippe, Genera) Debility, Throat and Lung Troubles, Blood Impurities, etc. is convincing. It is palatable as honey and contains the nutri- tive and curative properties of Pure Cod Liver Oil, extracted by us from fresh cad. livers, combined with the Compound Syrup of Hypophosphites and the Extracts of Malt and Wild Cherry... Dr. Austin D. Irvine, of Canada, says: "I have used it in cases where cod liver oil was indicated but could not be taken by the patient, and the results following were very gratifying." It is effective from sensitive and nervous, stomachs; It cannot deceive or dis- appoint you, and comes to the rescue of these who have received to benefit from any other treatment. It stands for the medical triumphs of the age. Sold by all chemists here.
