sought "sanctuary" in the catholic cathedral. After sonie delay and objection on the part of the bishop and priests, the German consul succeeded in having the man turned over to the Chinese officials. Thus the case stands. The people are talking a good deal about the case and want to know whether or not the officials will dare to punish a member of the catholic mission. It is commonly reported that the priests have declared that he shall not be punished. It is to be hoped that the officials will do their duty and punish the man as he deserves. It would be a wholesome lesson to those who seek to connect themselves with a mission for the sake of protection from the crimes they are guilty of.

Dear Sir-In Messrs. J.A. Sullivan and Co.'s Shanghai Share Report of March 26, attention is called to the great discrepancy between the China and London value of Hong-fered to Amara same capacity. kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation shares, the difference being no less than $128, or say at is. gd, equal to £140, per share in favour of London. This serious disadvant- age under which shareholders on the China re- gister labour is now intensified by the fact of the Treasury and Income Tax Office having called upon the Bank to furnish a return of dividends paid in London to shareholders on the China register, which renders them liable to deduc tion for income tax, and such shareholders,

Whether the bank was right in giving the Treasury the names of shareholders on the China register receiving dividends in Lon- dpa is for the shareholders to investigate and contest; but having disclosed the amount of dividends received, with, their names and addresses, it seems only fair and reasonable that the unfortunate. China shareholders should at least be put on the same fooling and enjoy the same advantages as privileged few on the London register, and, Bimilarly, receive their dividends when paid in London free from income tax. It is to be hoped the China shareholders will agitate this point and insist on participating in all the benefits and immunities reaped by the share holders on the London register-1 am, &c, "Hongkong Register."

The letter of our correspondent "Hong Kong Register," calls attention to a sub- ject that has very frequently puzzled people namely, the disparity between the quotation of Hongkong and Shanghai Bank shares out in the East and in Lan- don. It is not only this bank's shares which show the anomaly. The same disparity in values is apparent in the shares of the China Mutual Steam. Navigation Company, and again the quotation of Japanese 5 per cent war a bouds. But the Hongkong Bank share dey on the Head Office register seems to be
