MR. JOHN ROBERTS AT NAGASAKI.

NAGASAKI, April 16th, In the record of things artistic, things do lightful to watch and to understand, a high place is occupied by the English game of billiards as played by Mr. John Roberts For many years

he has been to the billiard table what Grace was to the cricket field-head and shoulders above all others. Nor many years ago he successfully offered a start of 9,000 in 24,000 to all who cared to try, and if he could not do this today, there are few indeed who would dare to meet him level. For he is the greatest exponent of the spot-barred game the world has ever seen-witness that remarkable 1,39% made in Manchester in 1894. Only once has this been exceeded, when T Taylor in 1891 made 1,457, due chiefly to the fact that the object balls were jammed in the mouth of a pocket. To watch John Roberts is to see an exquisite apprehension of all the points of the game, allied to a delicate cunning. His com antanil over the balls is wonderful. At the Top of the table he groups them, separates them ever so gently, groups them again, and so, with unfaltering accuracy, with touch and strength judged to a nicety, compiles his break. His losing hazards are remarkable, 100. In 1898 he made the wonderful record of 91 successive." lasers "off the red, a break of 294 made without using his opponent's ball! The record of his achievements is envious read- ing for those who love the game.

On Monday night Mr. Roberts appeared at the Nagasaki Club, and there played a game of 1,000 up against Mr. R. F. Inman, by far our best local player. An audience of about 60 gathered to watch the game, and followed its progress with the keenest interest. Inman he gan well with a pretty 34, and for five visits to the table had no response from Roberts. In deed he put on 68 points before the champion had stored to. Then came an opening, and Roberts put together 47, followed it shortly with 1, and again with splendid rans of 119, 66, and a superb break of 205, During this time Inman had failed to score very many, and the interval found Roberts in the middle of a break. The scoring after resumption of play was fast so far as Roberts was con- cerned, but Inman was not successful for some time-due, it may be, to over-anxiety, Still he improved somewhat towards the end and once or twice ran into double figures. He was caught when he had reached Boo, and it is distinaly creditable to him that he reached 895, and was thus beaten by 105. The best breaks of the evening were

Inman:-34, 16, 11, 10, 14, 18, 11, and 18. Innings 41. Average 6.

After this came an exhibition of fancy strokes, Here again Roberts showed himself utterly master of the balls, having absolute knowledge: of what is possible with them. It avails" both; ing to attempt to describe them that were difficult matter indeed.
