THE HONGKONG TELEGRAPH, FRIDAY, APRIL 18, 1902.
BLOWING UP THE ROOK IN SINGAPORE RIVER.
The Sirails Times of the 10th inst; says i... Singapore learned this moming, with horror. As arranged en the 9th inst, day the Straits andamazement, that a murderours gang of burgimer, the large block of rack which impeded

gentleman himself, and seriously
wounded Miss Gunn—a young lady who came out here with Mr. and Mrs. Rutherford a couple of months ago, and has since being staying with them. The details of the crime show it to have been one of the most daring and cold blooded outrages ever planned in this to and also one of the most wanton. When Mr. Rutherford had been literally ripped open by one of the criminals, another, who was being poredi stabbed the porn in his fight and again stabbed the unfortunate gentle
gentleman.. He succumbed to his injuries at 2.30 o'clock this aftemoon, just twelve hours after being
stabbed."
The utmost sympathy is felt for Mrs. Ruther ford
It will be remembered that Mr. Rutherford only arrived here from England a couple of months ago, having come out as Managing, Director of the Tanjong Pagar Dock Co

The police under Mr. Cuscaden, Hall and all along the sea front of the I. G. P. and Mr. Wathen. G. P. O., kept the crowd back and turned them out of any place that was likely to be dangerous. The arrangements for firing the mine, which contained 1.80 lbs. of dynamite, were in charge of the Submarine Mining Company of the Royal Engineers, under Captain. Mildred and Lieut. Butterworth. The ignition was electrical, and was effected by means of a powerful battery of go Léclanché cells placed near Cavenagh Bridge. The ends of the cable were connected with this battery,

A later edition of the paper says - The profound impression produced upon the community by the shocking murder of Mr. Rutherford, is testified to by the number of flags that are half-masted in the town to-day (the ith inst.) as well as by the comments upon the tragedy, which has been the sole topic of general conversation since yesterday morning,
Some additional particulars concerning the crime itself are to hand,
It appears that Mrs. Rutherford got a revolver with which she sought to shoot, the assailants, and found too late that it was not loaded. By the time she found the ammunition the mur derers had gone, but it was the shots she, sub sequently fired into the garden that attracted the attention of Mr. B. Com in the Tanglin Club bungalow next door, and he rushed to Draycott where he was the first person to render asssistance to the family. There ho found Mr. Rutherford already stretched on his bed but quite conscious He immediately ran and fetched Dr. Galloway, Mr. D'Cotta states that when he want to report matters at the Orchard Road Police Station at 4.30 o'clock-two hours after the tragedy—they were stilly ignorant of the

The Standard lobbyist says:-
It has been felt for, some time that, in the present temper of the Nationalist party, there would be some risk of unfortunate incidents if the King went to Ireland. Ministers, in ad vising his Majesty, may have been influenced by another consideration. It is also stated that several of the leaders of Roman Catholic opinion in Ireland have warned the Governs ment that it would be inexpedient for his Majesty to visit Ireland so long as the Sovereign opening of the reign, against certain doctrines is required to make the Declaration, at the

IRISH PRESS COMMENT. Most of the Dablin papers comment on the abandonment of the visit,
The Daily Express (Conservative) says that the announcement will give very real dis. appointment to the King's loyal subjects in this country. At a time when the fame of Ireland has been dragged in the dirt by the-hired and blatant disloyalty of a few score of political adventurers they had a generous anxiety by the ardour of their welcome to their Majesties to rehabilitate their country's honour in the eyes of the Empire.
The Irish Timar.(Unionial) says— His Majesty would probably have been dis- posed to make a special effort to gratify his Trish subjects if there had been any disposition on the part of their journalistic and. Parlia mentary mouthpieces to make it clear that he would be welcome. But as they have done all in their power to convey an opposite, and, in our opinion, a quite erroneous view, it is hardly surprising that the visit has been postponed.
The Freeman's Journal remarks that such decision is absolutely without precedent, and adds
