CANTON NOTES.

(From our own Correspondent.)

CANTON, April 9th

THE KWANGSIREBELLION

The Intest advices received here indicate that the rebellion has practically collapsed: Some of the missionaries who left their stations are preparing to return to them. The rebels may again gather insufficient numbers to cause trouble but at present they show little life.

ROBBERY,

Some large shops in the city of Tung Kun were robbed by an armed band a few night ago. A large sum of money, was carried away. A night or two after the large family of Wan. living jast outside Tung Kun city was attacked and a good number of the houses robbed. There are an unusual number of robberies re- ported for this time of the year. This may be accounted for by the fact that so many men are out of work Ordinarily every man who will work can find it and be well paid at this time. of the year. However, the dry weather has made it impossible to cultivate the land and as consequence hundreds are out of work It always happens that when there are numbers of idle men there are plenty of robberies.

ZA CHOLERA. A

Little that is new to report. The daily death Tate continues about as usual. The locality in which the disease 13 worst changes. Honam continues to report a goodly number. The villages about Canton seem all to have more or less

Some days ago the British Consul urged the Viceroy to see that the streets were cleaned but little notice was taken of the request and nothing done to clean up. Now the United States, Consul bas urged the Viceroy to do something to prevent the spread of the disease and save the lives of his people. Both the Nam Hoi and the Pun U magistrates have put. out proclamations embodying the suggestions- of the United States Consul. They urge that the drains be cleaned and flushed but as there is no water it is difficult to understand how this can be done except where the fire hose reaches. This would take in only a small part of the city. The people are also urged to bo the water well, before using it and it is suggested that a few drops of sulphuric acid be drunk with the water used twice a day. The Chinese are, not likely to take to sulphur water as they believe that this would produce heat
