THE WORK OF THE WORLD.
JAPANESE COMPETITION IN CHINA
In the protection of our own commercial in- terests in China we find ourselves allied to Japan, the nation which will do much, and propably more than any other, to ruin our extensive Chinese trade. That statement is only in part a compliment to Japancae industry, for we have to fear, not only the rapidly growing exports of Japan which can be met by equal enterprise. but the nature of japanese exports to China, which Heaven forbid, we should at tempt to imitate. Not long ago I had the oportunity of examining a collection formed at one of the Chinese Treaty Ports of articles imported from Japan, and specially made for the Chinese market. There were umbrellas, matches, soaps, scents, hand mirrors, clocks hair-ornaments, &c., all of the most trashy kind and selling at prices which we could not even afford to make trash for. Moreover, the Japa- nese manufacturer knows exactly the kind of curly-tailed dragon to tickle the Chinese fancy, 'and that sort of thing, as the reader probably knows, goes a very long way with the Celes. fails. In fine, the Japanese have every reason to be happy if we hold the Chinese door open. to their wares.
TAN BRITISH GOODS. IN JAPAN, The import trade of Japan is now worth 430,000,000 per annum, our contribution being about £7,000,000. Our trade with Japan bas Increased considerably in a decade, for in 1890 we cold the Japanese goods value only £4,250,000. But for American competition we should have done far better, for American sales to Japan increased in the same time from £1,100,000 to £6,400,000. Our chief com- petitor in Japan besides the United States is Japan herself, whose induurial activity is rapidly extending, her once picturesque in- habitants crowding into the factories in the cause of progress. All our exports to Japan are beginning to meet with home competition | yarns and textiles, iron, steel, and machinery, railway carriages and paper, the adaptable Japanese are learning to make for themselves, British goods, however, will now be very popular in Japan, and if our traders do not make hay while the sun shines thay have not their old-time enterprise.
JAPANESE COMMERCIAL HONESTY. Tapanese exports, I am sorry to say, contain many unblushing, imitations of European designs, brands, and trade marks. Take their matches; for instance, which have completely vanquished all competitors in
In Chinese ports The labels in many cases afirm that the cop tents of the boxes are made le Europą.“
It is only fair to say that this sort of thing is by no means universal, for many Japanese match bores bear the unmistakable legend, Made in Japan. I have Japanese, clock with German works made for the Chinese market. It is not proud of its Japan bongia, however, for it has a Euroopan pic front, and a label inside, which reads Clock Trade mark A. C. Aichicl Co-Morning Lead
