Many of the soldiery from the Imperial forces are reported to have desorted and to have joined the standard of rebellion, owing perhaps to the allurements of more pay and probably more loot. The election of two representatives of the Shipping Interests of Shanghai on the Whang- poo Conservancy Board was held in the office of the Senior Consul, before the Consular Body, says the Shanghai Times of 14th inst., when Mr.A, M. Marshall Agent of the P & O. Co., and Mr. Tamiq Hayashi, Manager of the Nip pon Yusen Kaisha were elected by a large majority.
The Shanghai Chamber of Commerce, also entitled under the section to two members sa the Board, has named Messrs. A. Wright, of Butterfield and Swire, and I. S. Fearon, of Messrs, Fearon, Daniel and Cp, as its repre- sentatives,

Sir C. MacDonald," Foreign Office, 30th January, 1902 Sir, I have signed to-day, with the Japanese Minister, an Agreement between Great Britain and Japan, of which a copy is inclosed in this despatch.
This Agreement may be regarded as the out- come of the events which have taken place during the last two years in the Far East and of d'in the part taken by Great Britain and Japan' dealing with them.
Throughout the troubles and complications which arose in China consequent upon the Boxer cutbreak and the attack upon the Peking Legations, the two Powers have been in close and uninterrupted communication, and have been actuated by similar views.
We have each of us desired that the integrity. and independence of the Chinese Empire should be preserved, that there should be no disturbance of the territorial status quo either. in China or in the adjoining regions, that alle nations should, within those regions, as well as within the limits of the Chinese Empire, be afforded equal opportunities for the develop ment oftheir commerce and industry, and that peace should not only be restored, but should, for the future, be maintained."

From latest advices réceived from the seat of the rebellion wa are reliably informed that the rising has not been aubusd, but on the contrary has assumed serious dimensions. Early this month, Viceroy T'ao Me, of Canton, ordered General Mu with two battalions of soldiers to Kwangsi, to act in conjunction with General Su, in suppressing the rebellion. At the onset. General Ma met the insurgents at Fang Cheng, where a bloody conflict is reported to have taken place.
